About PMPRO VAT Tax Addon
One price, two different invoices depending on who buys
Selling a membership to customers across several European countries seems simple until payment time: the private individual should see VAT added to their purchase, while a company with a VAT number can avoid that tax. If your form does not tell them apart, you either overcharge a business customer or apply the tax incorrectly to the consumer.
This Paid Memberships Pro add-on works at exactly that point of the checkout. It is for anyone who needs the VAT calculation handled in the sign-up form itself, not by hand afterwards.
What the buyer sees at checkout with PMPro VAT Tax Addon
The plugin adds a section titled "European Union Residents VAT" to the checkout form. Inside, the customer has two paths:
- Choose their country of residence from a drop-down, so VAT is calculated with that country's rate.
- Enter their VAT number to avoid the tax. The number is validated with the European Commission's SOAP service, so typing any random figure is not enough.
On the seller's side, you need to set your country (the "Seller Country" field) under Memberships > Settings > Payment Gateway. With that, the VAT field is hidden by default when buyer and seller are in the same country, although you can change that behavior with a filter.
Fixed rates inside the plugin and hooks to adjust them
The percentages come from constant rates defined in the plugin itself, the ones listed by the European Commission. The applicable rate can depend on legal changes, the country you are in and your business sector, and which rate applies to your activity is a question for your tax advisor.
For those adjustments the plugin offers developer filters:
- Change the VAT rate for each country.
- Modify the list of countries treated as EU members.
- Decide whether the VAT field is hidden when buyer and seller share a country.
- Skip VAT number validation or replace it with your own.
- Alter the final tax amount added to the order.
- Change the rounding decimals (two by default).
If you also install the GeoIP Detect plugin, the add-on can detect the user's country automatically instead of relying only on what they pick in the drop-down.
Is PMPro VAT Tax Addon enough, or is your VAT more complicated than one rate per country?
It is an add-on, not a standalone plugin: it needs Paid Memberships Pro installed and active. It covers VAT for EU residents with per-country rates; if you need reduced rates or other rules for your sector, plan on someone with coding skills using the filters. After activation you need to configure a few settings before selling.
Does it work without Paid Memberships Pro?
No. It adds its section to the PMPro checkout and depends on it to work.
Is the VAT number checked to be real?
Yes, it is validated with the European Commission's SOAP service. If you prefer another method, there are filters to skip validation or customize its result.
Does it detect the buyer's country without them choosing it?
Yes, as long as the GeoIP Detect plugin is installed and active.
Can I apply reduced rates?
With code: the per-country rate filter lets you change the percentages the add-on uses.
