About Robin image optimizer
Images weigh more than everything else on your page
You upload a 4 MB photo from your phone, insert it into a post and forget about it. Repeat that a hundred times and you have a site that loads slowly without any plugin or theme being to blame. Images are usually most of a page's weight, and almost nobody reviews them one by one.
Robin image optimizer tackles that problem without asking you to change how you work: it optimizes images as soon as you upload them and works in the background. You keep using the media library as always.
How Robin compresses and which formats it serves
The plugin analyzes each image and applies a compression level to reduce its size without it being noticeable at a glance. If you want to decide yourself, there are four modes:
- Lossless
- Lossy
- PageSpeed-focused: tuned to improve performance metrics and audits.
- Custom: to set the parameters yourself.
It also converts to WebP, a format lighter than JPEG and PNG, and serves it only to browsers that support it, with a fallback for those that don't. It can also strip EXIF data (the camera, date and sometimes location information that photos carry), which saves a few bytes and avoids publishing data you may not have wanted to show.
Your old archive can be cleaned up too
Installing an optimizer on a site with years of content leaves a problem: images already uploaded still weigh the same. Bulk optimization processes the existing library while showing progress, and background processing keeps the site from suffering in the meantime.
You can also optimize folders outside the media library, such as the images that come with your theme or plugins. If you have a theme with many graphic assets of its own, this makes a difference.
Robin links with Super Page Cache, from the same team: one lightens the images and the other delivers the page already cached. Using them together is not required, but they complement each other.
Free or Pro: the decision to make before installing
The free version offers WebP conversion with no limit on the number of images. Some features are exclusive to the Pro version, and you should know them before deciding:
- AVIF, the format that compresses more than WebP, especially on large or high-resolution images.
- Custom folder optimization.
- Unlimited bulk optimization and background optimization.
Robin is not an editor or a creative resizing service: it reduces weight, it doesn't redo your photos. And results depend on the type of image, so a large saving on photographs may be smaller on graphics that are already very optimized.
Is there an image limit?
There is no cap on the number of images to optimize.
Will I notice a loss of quality?
It depends on the mode. With lossless mode there should be no visible difference; with lossy compression, test it first on a few important photos.
Do I need AVIF?
Not always. WebP covers everyday images well. AVIF pays off on pages with large, full-width images, where every kilobyte counts.
