About s2member Pro WordPress Plugin
Charging is the easy part; cutting off access on time is the hard one
Anyone selling content by subscription starts out worried about the payment button and ends up losing sleep over what happens afterwards: the customer who cancels, the card that fails month after month, the chargeback that arrives weeks later and the member who keeps logging in as if nothing had happened. If that cut-off is done by hand, sooner or later you give content away without noticing.
s2Member Pro is built for that part. It protects WordPress content, sells access and lets payment changes open or close the door on their own, relying on WordPress roles and capabilities.
From locked content to the first member: a walkthrough with s2Member Pro
Picture an academy with video courses and a downloads area. This is how you set it up:
- You decide what gets locked. Posts, pages, tags, categories, URIs, BuddyPress and bbPress, and even fragments inside a page. Also downloads and audio and video streaming, with files on your own server or through the Amazon integration.
- You define how it is sold. Recurring or non-recurring subscription, fixed-term access (two days, one year), lifetime access, or a free or paid trial period. With PayPal Standard buttons, the trial and the billing interval are capped at 5 years: charging every 10 years is not possible. With the rrt attribute you can limit the installments: three monthly payments and, when they end, billing and access end too.
- You generate the button. The generators in the WordPress dashboard ask for level, price, interval and custom capabilities, and return a shortcode you paste into a page.
- You choose how payment happens. With PayPal Standard the customer completes payment at PayPal.com and comes back to your site to register. With the Pro-Forms of the Pro version, registration and payment happen in a single step on your site, with Stripe, PayPal Pro, Authorize.Net or ClickBank.
- You forget about the aftermath. PayPal notifications tell the plugin about cancellations, refunds and chargebacks, and access is withdrawn. If recurring payments fail too many times, it is withdrawn as well.
Stripe, coupons and selling a single page: the most common questions
Can I charge without the customer leaving my site?
Yes, with the Pro-Forms and one of the gateways in the Pro version. With PayPal Standard buttons, no: payment is made at PayPal.com.
Is there a limit on membership levels?
In the Pro version levels are unlimited, and it adds discount coupons and gift or redemption codes.
Can I sell a single post or a download?
Yes. You can sell access to specific posts or pages, to file downloads or to custom capabilities that open specific parts of your content.
What happens when temporary access ends?
The end-of-access system withdraws it according to the behavior you have configured. Review that setting before launching.
Selling a single page without asking for registration
Access to a specific post or page works like selling a product: the buyer pays and sees that content, without creating an account. It suits a report, a template or a standalone video that does not justify a membership. If you want an ongoing relationship with the customer, you need membership levels and registration.
Shortcodes instead of screens: the price of so much flexibility
Almost everything is handled with shortcodes and attributes, which gives you a lot of control over recurrences and access, but means pasting, testing and adjusting. Test every flow from start to finish (purchase, cancellation, expiry) before opening to the public, especially if you combine levels, capabilities and coupons.
