About SearchWP Metrics
Your internal search box receives questions every day that none of your pages answers, and almost nobody knows because those searches leave no trace: the visitor types, finds nothing and leaves without a word. SearchWP Metrics is the extension that records that activity so you can stop guessing what your audience is missing.
A Monday with SearchWP Metrics: from a lost search to a new page
Imagine you run a site with lots of content and want to know whether people find what they look for. This is the usual route:
- Step 1, activate the extension: from then on, search activity is recorded. It works on top of SearchWP, so you need the main plugin installed; it is not a standalone analytics tool.
- Step 2, look at the most frequent searches: you see what people type most and how many searches are made in total. This shows what your visitors call things, which often differs from your titles.
- Step 3, review searches with no results: these are obvious content gaps. If ten people search for something that does not exist on your site, there is a page waiting to be written.
- Step 4, check the clicks: the clicks report shows which results get clicked. If everyone ignores the first and clicks the fourth, your ranking does not match what they expect.
- Step 5, act: you create content, adjust relevance or fix terms. The extension shows you the problem; the fix is up to you.
Data you can read without leaving the dashboard
The metrics include total searches, average click position and queries with no results. A widget on the WordPress dashboard also shows the essentials at a glance, and you can filter the data to keep what matters to you. If you prefer working with your own tools, you can export everything to a CSV file.
Automatic suggestions: useful, but they do not replace your judgement
The extension includes an assistant that points out popular keywords, results that convert well or areas where search targeting could improve. It is a starting point, but deciding what content to create or which page deserves a higher spot is still up to you. The algorithm adapts to visitor behavior; try it with your own traffic before assuming how much it changes the ranking.

Does it work without SearchWP?
No. It is an extension of the SearchWP plugin and it must be installed to record searches.
Does it work on WordPress.com?
SearchWP is designed for self-hosted WordPress (.org) installs, not for WordPress.com.
Can I take my data with me?
Yes, through the CSV export.
Is it useful for small sites?
It depends on search volume. With little traffic you will see little data and trends will take time to become reliable.
Who gets the most out of it and who does not
Sites where search is an important way in will benefit: knowledge bases, stores with many products, blogs with a large archive or documentation sites. If your site has four pages and almost nobody uses the search box, the reports will stay nearly empty and it is not worth it.
