About SearchWP Polylang Integration
You search in Catalan and get a result in English
On a Polylang site, the default WordPress search knows nothing about languages: visitors type in their own language and get a mix of posts and pages from every version of the site. The content is well translated, but search hands it over jumbled, and anyone who can't find what they need in their language leaves.
SearchWP Polylang Integration is the extension that fixes this: it makes SearchWP limit results to the active language of the content you manage with Polylang.
A multilingual site is lost at the search box, not in the translation
Anyone who invests in translating a website tends to assume the work ends when each version is published. But a visitor arriving with a specific question doesn't browse menus: they type in the search box. If the first result is in another language, the translation you paid for is useless at that moment. This extension doesn't add content or translate anything: it only stops search from ignoring the language structure you've already built.
How SearchWP Polylang Integration filters by language
Once activated, SearchWP stops showing results from every language and sticks to the language the person is browsing in. There's no code to write and no per-language rules to set up.
- Results in the active language: a visitor on the French version sees French content.
- SearchWP's search engine: it indexes custom fields, taxonomies, tags and PDF content, and ranks by relevance.
- Other SearchWP features: live Ajax search, custom results order, a search popup and search analytics.
What it needs to work
It's an extension, not a standalone search tool. It needs SearchWP installed and Polylang managing the languages. It doesn't translate or create content either. And SearchWP only works on self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org), not on WordPress.com.
Frequently asked questions about SearchWP Polylang Integration
Does it work without SearchWP?
No. It's an add-on to the main plugin and depends on it.
Do I have to configure each language?
No. The extension is activated and adapts results to the site's language based on Polylang.
Does it highlight search terms?
SearchWP can highlight terms in results and generate excerpts around them, depending on its settings.
Does it index author details?
Not by default. SearchWP can be set up to index any content, including author information.
Test it with your toughest case: a search term that exists in several languages
To check that everything works, search for a term that exists in two or more versions of your site, from each language. Each version should return only its own content.
