A growing blog and a search engine that doesn't know where to start
You publish, add categories, tags and maybe a custom content type, and at some point not even you remember which URLs exist. Crawlers don't know either if nobody tells them. Sitemap Plus automatically generates an XML sitemap so search engines can understand the structure of your site more easily.
A sitemap is not a list of everything you have, it is a list of what you want crawled. If you put tag archives with a single post on the same level as your important pages, the map treats them all alike. It pays to decide what goes in before you switch anything on.
Which URLs Sitemap Plus puts in the map
You can include these elements:
- Pages and posts
- Post categories and tags
- Custom post types
- Default taxonomies
- Custom URLs
You can also add a media sitemap. The settings are simple and there is no code to touch.
Robots.txt, canonicals and file size
Three settings save technical work. The plugin adds the sitemap path to robots.txt by itself, so you don't have to edit it by hand. It can add canonical URLs to pages and posts. And it lets you set the maximum number of URLs per file. The content change frequency is also configurable, but with a single value for all pages, not page by page.

Once your Google account is connected, the plugin lets you add a website, add a sitemap, delete a website and get website info. Even so, submitting a sitemap doesn't force Google to index anything: it only tells it where to look.
Whether Google indexes your URLs doesn't depend on Sitemap Plus
This is what the plugin solves and what is left to you:
- Already solved: XML generation, inclusion of posts, pages, taxonomies and custom types, the path in robots.txt and sending the map to your Google account.
- On you: making sure the content deserves to be indexed. A perfect map with weak pages won't raise rankings.
- On you: deciding which taxonomies or URLs to leave out so you don't list archives with no value.
- With another plugin: alternate language pages are added using the Multilanguage plugin; without it, don't count on them.
- To check in the demo: if you need a sitemap page for visitors, don't take it for granted.
Common questions before switching it on
Does it include my custom post types? Yes, as well as pages, posts, categories, tags and default taxonomies.
Can I set a different frequency for each page? No, the change frequency is set once for all of them.
Do I have to edit robots.txt? No, the plugin adds the sitemap path automatically.
Does it work for a multilingual site? It can add alternate language pages, but it needs the Multilanguage plugin for that.
