Sonora: a photography website where your work is the star

Almost every photographer runs into the same thing when building a website: the photos are good, but the theme squeezes them into a layout that demands more attention than they do. Sonora is a WordPress theme for photography portfolios, with light and dark variants and 9 predesigned homepages that you can import with one click from the demo.

A detail of the trade: the same series reads differently depending on how you lay it out. In a slider it is seen photo by photo; in a grid, as a set. Sonora lets you choose per project, so try your own series in each format before you decide. It also includes the Slider Revolution plugin.

Portfolio and proofing gallery: a layout for every series

The portfolio list supports gallery, masonry, justified gallery and slider layouts. You can paginate it in the standard way, with a load more button or with infinite scroll, which helps if you have piled up many sessions and don't want an endless page. Each project has its own page, with gallery, slider, images or full-width images variants, and a shortcode to show the project details.

It also brings its own content type for proofing galleries, designed to show the client the photos from a session. To round out the site there are shortcodes for testimonials, team, client list, Instagram, pricing, countdown and Google Map, and a blog with post formats such as gallery, video, audio, quote or link.

Headers, light and dark mode, and mobile

Sonora offers four header types: minimal, standard, vertical sliding and vertical, with several behaviors, a side area, integrated search and a customizable mega menu. On a photo website the choice matters: a vertical header leaves more screen for the image, while a standard one is what visitors expect to find. You can upload different logos for the light version, the dark one, the sticky header and mobile.

Sonora brings store layouts and is compatible with WooCommerce, but selling depends on that plugin and on what you set up. Here is how the work is split:

• Already solved: one-click demo import and 9 homepages to start from a solid base.
• Already solved: the look of the store, with a product list shortcode, a dropdown cart and a side cart.
• Separate: WooCommerce for the catalog, payments, taxes and shipping.
• Separate: Contact Form 7 for forms; the theme brings the widget, not the plugin.
• Separate: the images. The ones in the demos are for presentation only and you cannot use them on your website: use your own or license photos from a stock site.
• Separate: check in the demo whether the proofing gallery fits the way you work (client access, favorites selection). If you need more, you will have to add another plugin.

Can I sell my photographs with Sonora?

Yes, by installing WooCommerce. The theme provides the store and cart design; you set up products, payments and shipping in the plugin.

Is it suitable for a multilingual website?

It is translation ready and compatible with WPML, which is the plugin you will need to manage the languages.

Is it only for fashion photography?

No. There are layouts for art photography, photo albums, proofing galleries, fashion and online stores, so it works just as well for a studio, an author photographer or a personal portfolio.
