About Toolset Views

When the content is in the database but not on the page

You have hundreds of posts, courses, forms or products, and the homepage still depends on someone copying and pasting links by hand. Every time something is added, the list has to be updated, and someone always forgets. Toolset Views exists for that: it queries the database and renders the result wherever you need it, so the page updates itself.

The hard part of sites with structured content is not publishing, it is keeping the lists that display it consistent.

How you build a query in Toolset Views

The flow has four steps, and understanding them tells you whether it suits you:

  • Choose what to load: the type of content you want to pull from the database.
  • Filter: show only what is relevant, for example reviews for a specific product, related stories or the speakers at a conference.
  • Format: the output is laid out with simple HTML, with predefined styles you can edit in depth.
  • Place it: on pages, templates, archives and even widgets.

You don't need to program to go far, but the output design relies on HTML, so it helps if it doesn't scare you.

What you can build with Toolset Views

Real sites give an idea of the scope: dynamic content lists on the homepage that update themselves, a custom search in a sidebar, a full-page search with 14 attributes and results on a Google map, a simple table of downloadable forms, a grid of courses and custom listings for WooCommerce products.

What is interesting is that one tool serves for a plain table or a filterable search. If today you solve each case with a different plugin, here you can unify them.

Compatible with your theme and page builder, but it already has a successor

Views works with any theme and page builder, and can be inserted wherever your builder allows. Keep one important detail in mind: Views has been replaced by Toolset Blocks, which builds the site visually with blocks. If you prefer to build with blocks, compare it; if you already work with Views or prefer its classic query approach, it is still a valid tool.

The design and the data are up to you

  • Already solved: loading content from the database, filtering it, formatting it and displaying it anywhere on the site.
  • You cover it, or another plugin does: creating the custom content types and fields you want to list, the content itself and the final visual style of your brand.
  • With a professional: very specific queries or outputs with a very particular design, if you are not comfortable with HTML.

Views displays what already exists; it does not invent structure. If your content is messy, the lists will come out messy.
