UmparanWP is a WordPress theme for news portals, with the dense layout large digital publications use: a homepage composed of blocks, plenty of headlines above the fold and navigation built for somebody arriving to browse rather than to find something specific.
It is developed in Indonesia and takes as its reference the design of a well-known publication there, from which it inherits the way the homepage is organised.
How the homepage is composed
With modules that combine: featured, grid in two variants, list and collection. Plus the discovery blocks that keep the reader: related posts, popular tags and most read.
That way of building a homepage from pieces is exactly what a publication posting twenty times a day needs. A blog theme with one column of posts by date does not work: you need to give different weight to each section and change it by the day.
What it brings for monetising
Built-in advertising slots, parallax ones included, and compatibility with the official accelerated pages plugin for posts. Also dark mode, an editorial team page and a trending page.
Two things worth weighing up
Splitting articles across pages. The theme includes it, and it is a feature that multiplies pageviews and therefore ads served. It is also among the things readers dislike most: everybody recognises the article split into five clicks and the usual reaction is to leave.
Worth using it only where the content genuinely is a sequence (a commented gallery, a step-by-step guide) rather than as the default. The short-term gain gets paid for with readers who stop coming back.
The product's language. It is built for the Indonesian market, so the documentation, the demo text and the author's support will be in that language or in English. The theme translates like any other, but worth allowing for if you are going to need support.
