About UpdraftPlus Backup Plugin
A backup you have never restored is not a backup
Almost everybody has backups. Almost nobody has tried restoring one. And the day they are needed, which is always a bad day, is when it turns out the file was incomplete, the database was missing or the process cut out halfway.
UpdraftPlus is the most used backup plugin in WordPress, and this version adds what separates a backup from a recovery plan.
Where they are stored
- Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive, which is what most people use.
- Amazon S3 and Rackspace, for anyone wanting storage designed for this.
- Several destinations at once, which is how you avoid depending on one provider.
There is a rule here worth taking seriously: a backup stored on the same server as the site is not a backup. If the server goes down, corrupts or somebody breaks in, it takes both with it. The backup has to live somewhere else.
What this version adds
Incremental backups. They save only what has changed since the last one, so the process is fast and light. On large sites this is not convenience, it is the difference between the backup finishing and it being cut off by an execution timeout.
Automatic backup before updating. The exact moment sites break is when a plugin gets updated. Having the backup taken just beforehand turns the scare into five minutes.
One-click cloning and migration. You connect two sites once and then move content between them whenever needed: production to staging and back, or one host to another.
Database encryption. This matters more than it looks. A backup contains the data of all your users, and a forgotten backup in an accessible folder is a data breach with everything that follows. Encrypted, even if somebody gets hold of it, they cannot read it.
It also allows restoring only one part (just the database, just the uploads) rather than the whole site.
What to do even though nobody does
Test the restore. Once, calmly, onto a copy of the site or a staging host, before you need it. It is an afternoon and it is the only way to know the plan works. After that, worth repeating whenever you change host or structure.
