About WooCommerce Advanced Shipping Packages
For the store that ships different things in one order, not for anyone sending to several addresses
A cart with a T-shirt and a sofa gets a single shipping price at checkout, and that price is almost always an average: it either loses you money on the heavy item or scares off the customer who only bought something small. The problem is not the rate, it is that WooCommerce treats the whole order as a single package.
WooCommerce Advanced Shipping Packages splits the cart into independent packages. Each package carries its own products and its own shipping options, and appears separately in the cart and at checkout. It suits you if:
- you want to give free shipping on only part of your catalog;
- you sell large items that should not travel by the ordinary route;
- you have products the customer can only pick up;
- you dispatch orders from more than one origin.
It is not for you if you want a customer to split one order across several addresses: the plugin only divides packages, and another separate extension exists for that case, Shipping Multiple Addresses. Nor is it a rates plugin on its own: it distributes the products and filters which methods are offered in each package, and it supports the individual rates of your WooCommerce shipping zones.
Partial free shipping, freight and pickup: cuts a single cart cannot make
These are the cases where splitting the cart makes the most sense:
- Partial free shipping: only the products you choose travel for free, and the customer sees clearly which ones do and which do not.
- Heavy items separately: you can offer the ordinary route or freight for bulky goods, without making the rest of the order more expensive.
- Pickup-only products: if the same cart also holds shippable items, the customer chooses between having those shipped or picking everything up.
- Several origins: if an order ships from different places, it costs you double to send it. By splitting the cart you can charge for each shipment separately.
If you handle large loads, Contact for Shipping Quote is another plugin that helps with them, but it is a separate product.
When a package is born and what goes into it: the conditional logic of Advanced Shipping Packages
The core of the plugin is a system of conditions: you define when a package is created and which products are added to it. There is no limit on the number of packages, and ordering lets you control which one applies first.
Your own name for each package
Each package can have whatever name you want, and that is the one the customer sees in the cart and at checkout. You can also rename the package WooCommerce creates by default.
Excluding shipping methods
Not every rate suits every package. With the exclude function, certain methods disappear when a specific package is created.
What the customer sees and what you see in the order
Products that match none of your rules stay in the default package, called «Shipping», and are processed as always. At checkout, the customer picks a shipping option for each package, which makes the process more transparent.
You see it too: the order admin screen shows which shipping methods were chosen and which products are inside each package, and the emails, both yours and the customer's, include the selected methods. It is also compatible with WooCommerce high-performance order storage (HPOS).
Questions before splitting your cart with Advanced Shipping Packages
Can it be used to send one order to several addresses?
No. It only splits the cart into packages according to your rules. For several delivery addresses you need another extension, such as Shipping Multiple Addresses.
What happens to products I do not put in any package?
They stay in the default package and are handled as before, with your usual shipping methods.
Is there a maximum number of packages?
No, you can create as many as you need and order them to decide which one applies first.
Can I hide a rate in a specific package?
Yes, with the exclude shipping methods function, which also supports the individual rates of WooCommerce shipping zones.
