About WooCommerce Automatic Payment Status
An order that goes through four statuses before it closes
You get paid for a digital product order and WooCommerce leaves it on "Processing" until someone marks it as completed by hand. Meanwhile, the customer who paid for downloadable software or a service with no shipping is left waiting, and you end up checking orders one by one just to click a button.
Whoever installs this sells products that need no parcel: there is nothing to prepare or ship, so the only pending step is administrative. That is the task this plugin removes, which is why it pays off more the more virtual your catalog is.
How WooCommerce Automatic Payment Status decides which order to complete
As soon as payment is received, the plugin changes the order status to the one you choose (usually "Completed"). What matters is that it doesn't treat everything the same: you work with groups of conditions.
- Payment gateway: for example, complete only what was paid by online transfer.
- Product category: automate one category and leave the rest as is.
- Product type: virtual, downloadable, etc.
- Specific product: a rule for one particular item.
Each condition supports the operators "is" and "is not", and you can create several groups joined with AND or OR. That way you can say, for example, that an order is completed when the product belongs to a certain category and the gateway is a specific one.
One email to the customer instead of a chain of notices
Without automation, the order moves through intermediate statuses and the customer may receive several notices. With the direct change, they receive a single notification tied to a single status change. For a downloads store, this means less noise in the buyer's inbox.
No hooks, no code
You can achieve something similar by coding with WooCommerce hooks, but that means touching code and maintaining it. And if you decide not to enable any condition, the plugin does not interfere and WooCommerce behaves as usual.
Orders with physical shipping are still up to you
The plugin changes statuses; it does nothing else. It's worth being clear on this before activating it:
- What it solves: moving orders to completed after payment based on gateway, category, type or product, with AND/OR groups.
- What you cover yourself: the actual delivery of physical products, packing and shipping.
- What you cover yourself: any status change other than the one you configure, such as refunds or cancellations.
- What you cover with another tool: invoices, labels or stock management, which are not part of this plugin.
If your store mixes virtual and physical products, use the type or category conditions so a physical order isn't marked as completed before it ships. Check those rules with a test order.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work for stores with physical products?
It is designed mainly for virtual products, downloads or services with no shipping. With physical products it only makes sense if you limit the rules with conditions so they don't affect those orders.
Do I have to enable conditions?
No. They are optional. If you don't configure any, the plugin doesn't change standard WooCommerce behavior.
Can I apply different rules depending on the payment gateway?
Yes. The gateway is one of the four available conditions, along with category, product type and specific product.
Can I switch to a status other than "Completed"?
Yes. When you create each group you choose the status the order should move to.
Do I need to know how to code?
No, and you don't need WooCommerce hooks either.
