About WooCommerce Cost of Goods

Selling a lot is not the same as making money

The WooCommerce dashboard shows how much comes in, but not how much you keep. A store can bill more every month and earn less if its best sellers are the lowest-margin products. Looking only at revenue leads you to push with advertising exactly what pays the least.

WooCommerce Cost of Goods adds a "Product cost" field and, with it, profit reports alongside your sales reports. The idea is simple: you enter what each item costs you and the plugin does the subtraction on every order.

How the cost works inside WooCommerce Cost of Goods

The cost is added to simple and variable products. On a variable product you can set a default cost for all variations or correct one by hand. You can also load costs in bulk instead of product by product.

When the purchase is completed, the total cost of each order line is saved. If your supplier raises prices in six months, old orders keep the cost they were sold with, so historical profit is not distorted.

If you already had orders before installing it, you can apply the costs to those earlier orders from Settings > Products > Inventory and see real profitability without waiting for new sales. You can also edit line item costs in editable orders and see the cost next to the price in the product table.

Which reports you get and who they are for

If you decide where to invest in advertising

The most and least profitable sales report tells you which products leave the most profit, not just which bring in the most revenue. It is the basis for deciding what to promote and what to stop pushing.

If you do the accounting or review margins

You get profit by date (net sales, product cost, profit and average profit per order), profit by product and profit by category, all with a date range. Profit and cost report data can be exported to CSV, and costs can be included in orders exported with Order/Customer CSV Export Suite and Customer/Order XML Export Suite.

If you have idle stock

Inventory valuation calculates the total value of your warehouse, using either the retail price or the product cost. The difference between both figures gives you an idea of the margin you have tied up.

If you import large catalogs

It is compatible with Product CSV Import Suite, useful when loading costs one by one would be unworkable.

It depends on you keeping costs up to date

The plugin does not know your costs: it only calculates with what you enter. An outdated or empty cost gives a wrong profit. Nor does it replace accounting software: it measures margin over product cost and says nothing about your business's other expenses. Before buying it, check on a copy of your store that it works well with your payment gateway.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with variable products?

Yes. You can set a default cost for all variations or adjust each one.

What about the orders I already have?

You can apply costs to earlier orders from Settings > Products > Inventory, once you have defined each product's cost.

Does the profit of past orders change if I modify a cost?

No, the cost of each line is saved when the order is placed, unless you apply costs to earlier orders or edit the lines of an editable order.

Where do I see the reports?

In WooCommerce > Reports > Profit.

What sets it apart from a normal sales report

All of the above comes down to changing the question: from "how much do I sell" to "how much do I earn". If your catalog has very different margins between products, that is where you will notice it most.
