About WooCommerce Currency Converter Widget
Seeing a price in a foreign currency means mental math, and mental math stalls purchases
Someone visiting your store from another country tends to do the same thing: look at the price, open another tab to convert it and, if it drags on, leave. WooCommerce Currency Converter Widget targets exactly that moment: it adds a converter so visitors can see product prices and order totals in the currency they choose.
The key is to understand what it is: a tool for viewing, not a system for charging in another currency. The implications are spelled out below.
Up-to-date rates with money.js and Open Exchange Rates
The widget uses the money.js library and the Open Exchange Rates API to fetch the latest exchange rates and recalculate prices dynamically. All WooCommerce prices are updated, totals included.
- As many currencies as you want: in the widget settings you add the currencies you need and they become available to shoppers on the public side of the store.
- Totals, not just product prices: the visitor also sees the order total converted.
- A record of what the customer saw: when the user goes through checkout, the converted total is stored, so you know which price was in front of them.
Three stores, three different uses for WooCommerce Currency Converter Widget
The one that sells abroad but charges in a single currency
This is the natural case. Your catalog and your payment gateway work in one currency, but visitors from other countries want to know how much that is in theirs before deciding. The converter saves them the extra tab and the doubt.
The one that hears "I saw a different price"
When a customer compares what they saw on screen with what their bank charged, the argument begins. Having the converted total that was shown to them gives you a reference to understand what happened. It is only an estimated reference, though: it does not replace what the gateway or the buyer's bank applies.
The one that wants customers to pay in their own currency
This is not the right plugin. It displays, it does not charge. If you want buyers to pay in the currency they prefer, the vendor itself recommends WooCommerce Multi-Currency for that.
Checkout still runs in your store's base currency
The base currency is kept in the payment process. Conversions are estimates and should be used for informational purposes only. If your customer expects to see and pay the same figure in their currency, this widget does not meet that expectation.
Frequently asked questions before installing it
Does it change the currency I charge in?
No. It only changes the currency displayed while the customer browses. Orders are charged in the base currency and the converted total they saw is saved.
Where do the exchange rates come from?
From Open Exchange Rates, through the money.js library, which updates the displayed prices dynamically.
How many currencies can I offer?
As many as you like: you add them in the widget settings and shoppers have them available in the store.
Is it right if I need customers to pay in their own currency?
No, it is for display only. To charge in several currencies you need an extension such as WooCommerce Multi-Currency.
Try it with your theme before you rely on it
Since it is a widget, part of its usefulness depends on where you place it and how it looks. Check in the demo that the selector is visible where customers would look for it and that it fits your theme's design.
