About WooCommerce Eu Vat and B2B

When you sell to a company in another European Union country, you do not charge the tax

It is the rule that breaks any shop built with only the retail customer in mind, and it is called the reverse charge.

It works like this. If you sell to a German individual, you charge tax. If you sell to a German company with a valid cross-border VAT number, you charge no tax at all: they declare it in their own country. Your invoice has to come out without tax and carrying the mention that the reverse charge applies.

Getting it wrong costs in both directions. If you charge tax that did not apply, your product comes out dearer than the competitor doing it right and you lose the sale. If you fail to charge it when it did apply, that money will be claimed from you.

What a plugin in this category does

  • Asks for the VAT number during checkout, from whoever is buying as a business.
  • Validates it against the European register there and then, to know whether it is real and active.
  • Removes the tax automatically when validation succeeds and the conditions are met.
  • Stores the validated detail, so the returning customer does not go through it again.
  • Distinguishes business from individual on the order, which is what invoicing needs afterwards.

The two decisions to make before switching it on

What happens when the European register does not answer. The validation service goes down fairly regularly, and that is neither the plugin's fault nor yours. There are two positions: accept the order without tax and check afterwards, or charge the tax and refund it if the number turns out valid. The first is comfortable for the customer and risky for you; the second is the reverse. It has to be chosen deliberately, not discovered on the day it fails.

A valid number does not mean the transaction is exempt. Exemption depends on more: where the goods leave from, where they go, whether it is goods or services, and your situation under the one-stop-shop scheme. A plugin checks the number; it does not decide your tax position.

Plainly put: this automates a formality, it does not replace your accountant. In cross-border trade that matters more than anywhere else.

Requirements

It needs WordPress and WooCommerce, and your shop configured with the correct tax rates to begin with. A validator running on top of a badly set tax table fixes nothing.

Alternatives in the catalogue

If on top of this you need wholesale pricing, order minimums and hidden prices, do not buy the pieces separately: B2BKing includes VAT number validation inside a complete B2B solution, and works out better than assembling four plugins that do not talk to each other.

If your case is simpler and you only need rates by customer type, WooCommerce Wholesale Pro covers that part, and this stays as the tax add-on it lacks.

And the piece that comes immediately after, because a reverse charge sale needs an invoice that says so: WooCommerce PDF Invoices generates invoices with the tax details and the legal mentions the transaction requires.

Frequently asked questions

What is the reverse charge?
That on a sale to a company in another EU country the tax is declared by the buyer, not the seller.

What is the number validated against?
Against the European register of cross-border operators, at the moment of purchase.

What if the validation service is down?
You have to decide in advance whether to accept the order or charge the tax. There is no single answer.

Is validating enough to skip the tax?
No. Exemption also depends on the type of transaction and your tax position.

Does it generate the invoices?
No. The invoice with the legal mentions comes from an invoicing plugin.

Is it useful for sales to individuals?
It contributes nothing there. Its territory is selling between companies in different countries.
