About WooCommerce Gift Cards

Selling gift cards often starts with a discount coupon in disguise: you hand out a code, subtract it from the cart, and at month end accounting can't tell whether that was a sale or a markdown. WooCommerce Gift Cards is built to avoid that mess: it treats every card as a prepaid balance, not as a discount.

A paid balance is not a coupon, and your accounting notices

Whoever buys a gift card has paid real money, and that amount stays in your store as a debt waiting to be spent. A coupon, on the other hand, is a promotion you decide to give away. WooCommerce Gift Cards keeps the two apart: it creates multi-purpose prepaid codes that are redeemed online. That's why it isn't meant for handing out free promotional credit; for that you already have WooCommerce coupons.

A birthday gift with WooCommerce Gift Cards, step by step

1. You create the card as a product

The card is published like any other product. It can be simple (a single amount) or variable (several amounts to choose from). If you'd rather have the customer type the amount they want, you need to add the Name Your Price plugin, which it works with.

2. The buyer personalizes it

At purchase, they can add one or several recipients, write a personal message and set the sender name the recipient will see. They can also choose a future delivery date: the date picker adjusts to the customer's time zone, so the email arrives on the birthday and not before.

3. You decide how long it lasts

You can create codes with an expiry, counted from the delivery date, and configure it per card. That lets you give each product a different validity period.

4. The recipient redeems it

They receive the code by email and apply it right before confirming the order, just like a coupon. If they have an account, they can save the card to it: the balance stays stored and is used automatically on future purchases, without typing the code again. The "Have a gift card?" form can be shown on both the cart and the checkout.

5. You control what has been issued

You can search and edit cards by code, sender or recipient, and review the store-wide transaction log by code or customer. There are reports on amounts issued, used and expired. You can also import and export codes as CSV, though it can't be used to sync two separate stores or to update codes that already exist.

Frequently asked questions

Does it sell physical cards or printable vouchers?

No. It only issues digital cards that are redeemed online. For physical or printable vouchers, the maker itself recommends PDF Product Vouchers.

Can I sell cards with recurring billing?

Yes, by combining it with WooCommerce Subscriptions.

Can the customer enter the amount?

Yes, but with Name Your Price. On its own, the plugin offers fixed amounts or variations.

Can I bring in codes I already had?

Yes, via CSV, if they were created with this same plugin. It also works for generating codes in bulk.

When it isn't what you're after

If your idea is to launch welcome credits or discounts in disguise, this plugin isn't made for that. And if you sell in a physical shop and want to hand over a card or a piece of paper, you need another tool. For a store that wants to sell digital gifts with controlled balances, it fits well.
