Telling a genuine distributor from somebody who wants cost price
That is the real problem with selling wholesale online. The moment you publish that there is a trade rate, anybody registers. And giving wholesale prices to a consumer does not only eat your margin: it annoys the distributors who genuinely buy volume and see that their advantage counts for nothing.
This plugin builds the front door: a form capturing what you need to know and an approval flow before the rate gets granted.
What the form captures
- Tax details: company name, tax identification and intra-community VAT number.
- Unlimited custom fields, for asking whatever your business decides: sector, expected volume, physical shop.
- File uploads, for requesting a business registration or trading licence, the most direct way of checking there is a business behind it.
- Terms of sale, with mandatory acceptance during registration itself.
The approval flow
Two modes. Automatic, where whoever registers receives the rate immediately. Or manual, where a notice reaches you and you decide one by one.
For most businesses manual is the right one, at least at the start. There is a management screen with search, filtering by status and bulk approval or rejection, so reviewing twenty applications is a matter of minutes. On approval, the user automatically moves to the wholesale role and receives their welcome email.
What this plugin does not do
It does not set the prices. And this is the confusion to avoid before buying. This one captures, approves and assigns the role. Who sees which price is decided by another plugin, the wholesale pricing one, acquired separately.
Both belong to the same product family, alongside the quick order form, the quotes and the payments. Worth being clear from the start about which ones you need, because buying only this leaves the loop half finished: you will have your wholesalers identified and they will still be seeing the consumer price.
A note on the intra-community VAT number
If you sell to businesses in other European Union countries, that number determines whether the invoice carries tax or not. Collecting it at registration is good; checking that it is valid and belongs to that company is another step, and worth solving before issuing the first tax-free invoice.
