It is the most widespread misunderstanding about WordPress security. People picture an attack as somebody determined to get into their particular site. It hardly ever is. What exists are programs sweeping the entire internet, trying /wp-login.php on every domain they find and firing known passwords at the admin user.

That means two things. One: you do not need to be important to be hit, existing is enough. And two, the good news: because the attack is automatic and blind, almost all of it stops with simple obstacles at the door. You do not need a fortress, you need the door not to be where everybody looks and not to accept a thousand attempts a minute.

The code is distributed under the GPL licence and its use is free. Updates, support, the cloud lists and activation against the maker's servers are separate services contracted with them. They are not the same thing, and buying one is not buying the other.
