About wpDiscuz myCRED Integration Addon
For the blog with active comments that wants to reward its regulars
Getting comments is not the hard part. The hard part is getting the same readers to come back and comment again, and helping newcomers see whose words deserve attention. This addon connects wpDiscuz with myCRED so that the votes on each comment turn into points, and so that badges and ranks show up right inside the conversation.
It suits you if you already use wpDiscuz and myCRED, or if you are willing to install both. It does not suit you if you expect something that works on its own or does more than it does:
- It is an addon for wpDiscuz and needs myCRED installed, with its Badges and Ranks modules activated.
- Points are earned and lost only through up votes and down votes. There are no points for rating an article.
- A user cannot give points to another as thanks for a good answer.
- It does not sort comments by stars or by rating.
How wpDiscuz myCRED Integration Addon hands out points
A comment's author earns points when it receives up votes and loses points when it receives down votes. Voters get paid too: they can receive an amount for voting on other people's comments.
Everything is configured on the myCRED Hooks screen, where the addon adds its own widget. From there you turn the votes-to-points conversion on or off, set how many points go up and down for the author, set how many the voter receives and edit the log template. The word "points" comes from myCRED's labels: if you would rather call them "gems", you change it in the myCRED settings.
Badges and ranks under the avatar, so veterans stand out
Under the author's avatar and label, the images of the badge and rank they have earned appear. You can show or hide badges and ranks separately, they adapt to any screen size and they are ready for right-to-left languages.
Mind which piece does what: how a badge is earned, whether there are tiers (silver to gold, for example) or how many points each rank requires is defined in myCRED, not here. And whether badges sit below or beside the avatar depends on the comment layout you use in wpDiscuz.
An up vote is not a correct answer
This system rewards what people applaud, not what is true or useful. On a blog with opposing opinions, the wittiest comment or the one closest to your audience scores, and whoever disagrees with good reason loses points. If your blog thrives on debate or technical answers, adjust the down amounts carefully: punishing every down vote heavily discourages precisely the people who bring a different point of view.
Also decide what whoever piles up points will win. myCRED can be used to build reward programs, but with nothing to earn, points end up as a number nobody looks at.
Questions before installing it
Do I need myCRED separately?
Yes. This addon does not replace myCRED: it only makes wpDiscuz and myCRED work together.
Does it work without wpDiscuz?
No. It is an addon for wpDiscuz and needs that comment plugin.
Can I change the word "points"?
Yes, from the myCRED settings, because the addon takes the label from there.
Can I give points for sharing or rating a post?
No. It only turns the up votes and down votes on comments into points.
What should I check in my myCRED?
That your version keeps the Hooks screen, because the integration is configured there.
