About wpForo Paid Memberships Pro

A free forum empties the membership, a closed forum doesn't sell

Anyone charging for a community faces a dilemma with the forum: if everything is open, non-payers read the same answers as payers; if everything is closed, outsiders can't see what they are missing. wpForo Paid Memberships Pro solves the technical part: it connects Paid Memberships Pro levels to access for each wpForo forum.

The business decision is still yours, and it is the one that matters: which forums stay visible as a showcase and which are reserved for those who pay.

Access by membership level in wpForo Paid Memberships Pro

When you edit a forum in the wpForo dashboard, you assign an access to each membership level created in Paid Memberships Pro. A basic level can get Read Only: they see topics and replies but don't take part. A higher level can get Standard Access: they read, create topics and reply.

If those accesses aren't enough, you can create your own with whatever set of permissions you want on the wpForo forum accesses page and hand them out among the levels. A restricted forum hides all of its topics from non-members.

Three communities, three ways to split the forum

Community with two plans

The basic plan comes in to read and the higher plan takes part. It is the simplest way to give upgrading a clear purpose: going from watching to asking and answering.

Support forum for a product

If you want anyone to see the question but only paying customers to see the answer, use the permission to view replies within the forum accesses: enable it in the access you give one group and disable it in the other's. That way visitors see the forum is active, but they don't walk away with the solution.

Internal forum with moderators

You can leave the forum closed to all usergroups except administrators and moderators, and open it only through membership levels. The team always gets in; everyone else only if their level allows it.

Levels take priority over usergroups

By default, wpForo assigns access by usergroup. With this integration, the membership level takes priority: if a user has access to a forum through their level, they get in even if their usergroup has No Access on that forum.

That's why the sensible approach is to set No Access for every group except administrators and moderators, and manage everyone else through levels. You won't need to worry about a paying member being locked out by the group they fall into.

Questions before building a members forum

Does it work with the free version of Paid Memberships Pro?

Yes, it can be used with it. What you need is the plugin installed, activated and with the levels already created.

Does it charge for subscriptions?

No. Payments and levels are handled by Paid Memberships Pro.

Can I give different access to each forum?

Yes, forum by forum. Each one is configured when you edit it.

Can I hide only some replies?

Yes, with the permission to view replies, distributed among the forum accesses of each group.

It needs wpForo and Paid Memberships Pro, and doesn't inherit from the category

It is an add-on: it doesn't work on its own. You need wpForo and Paid Memberships Pro already set up.

Restriction is not inherited: if you block a category (parent forum), its child forums are not blocked. You have to restrict individually each forum you want to hide from non-members.
