About WPML EXPORT AND IMPORT WORDPRESS PLUGIN
Every row in its language, every translation tied to its original
Importing a multilingual catalog from a spreadsheet, a PIM or a booking platform looks like a translation job. It isn't: the hard part is knowing which row is the translation of which. If the content comes in without that information, WPML sees loose pieces and you end up pairing versions by hand, one by one.
WPML Export and Import doesn't move the data: it adds the language information at the end so each row lands in its language and each translation is linked to its original. It works for posts, pages, custom post types, taxonomies, WooCommerce products and their variations.
Three columns that link the translations
If you prepare the file yourself, you add three columns to each row:
- _wpml_import_translation_group: a unique value shared by all language versions of the same piece of content. For products it is the SKU; for everything else, an ID you generate.
- _wpml_import_language_code: the ISO code of the row's language (en, es, fr, pt-pt...).
- _wpml_import_source_language_code: only on translation rows, with the language of the original; empty on original rows.
Use each group value for one piece of content only: WPML keeps the group of every item, and a row you import later with the same value joins the translations of that item. There are two optional columns for posts and products: one sets the final status (publish, draft, pending or private) after the import, and the other sends the original to automatic translation, which only acts when WPML's Translate Everything mode is on.
It works with the importer you already use
It doesn't replace your import tool, it works alongside it. These are the ones it supports:
- WP All Export Pro and WP All Import Pro: they export with the language included and import posts, products and taxonomies from CSV or XML.
- The built-in WooCommerce tool (Products → Export and Import): it moves products in a single CSV.
- The built-in WordPress exporter and importer: posts, pages and custom post types through WXR files.
- The WP Import Export plugin.
- Your own CSV or XML pipelines, as long as they can add the language columns.
You need a separate import plugin
This plugin is not an importer. This is how the work splits:
- Already solved: assigning the right language to each row and linking each translation to its original.
- You cover it with another plugin: moving the data (WP All Import Pro, the WooCommerce importer, the WordPress one or WP Import Export).
- You cover it with another plugin: having WPML and WPML String Translation active on the destination site, and WPML Multilingual & Multicurrency for WooCommerce if you import products.
- You cover it by hand: creating every target language in WPML → Settings → Languages before importing.
Taxonomies first, then posts and products
If you have a separate file for taxonomies, always import it first: categories, tags and other taxonomies must exist so posts and products can reference them. With WP All Import Pro and similar tools you prepare two sheets, one for taxonomies and one for posts and products; the built-in WooCommerce tool uses a single one because product categories live inside the rows.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work without WPML?
No. It needs WPML and WPML String Translation active on the site you import into, with the target languages already created.
Is it suitable for stores with variable products?
Yes, it covers WooCommerce products and their variations, with WPML Multilingual & Multicurrency for WooCommerce active. Custom attributes need their own column.
What about the WPML All Import plugin?
It is the earlier plugin and is no longer recommended. This is the current procedure for importing multilingual content.
