A long form scares customers before they type a thing
Shoppers who reach checkout have already decided to buy, but they land on an endless page: billing, shipping, order summary and payment method, all together. They don't know how much is left, they slip on one field and they get tired. That abandoned cart has nothing to do with your catalog or your prices.
There is something worth knowing before you buy: splitting checkout into steps does not remove a single field. What changes is how the customer perceives it: they see one part at a time and know which step they are on. If your form asks for data you don't need, the plugin organizes it but does not trim it.
How YITH WooCommerce Multi-step Checkout Premium splits the form
The plugin separates the WooCommerce checkout into steps: Login, Billing, Shipping, Order info and Payment. You decide which ones are shown and how they behave:
- Merged steps: you can join billing with shipping, and order summary with payment, to end up with fewer steps.
- AJAX validation: if you enable it, the customer can't move on until the required fields of the step are filled in.
- Optional shipping step: if you sell products that are not shipped, you remove it and it doesn't appear.
- Login and guest checkout: you can allow both, or skip the login step. You can also customize the message for returning customers.
- Saved data: there is an option to keep what the customer already typed in the fields, so if they leave and come back they don't start from scratch.
Ten timeline styles so checkout doesn't clash with your theme
The progress bar comes in ten designs, five vertical and five horizontal, plus text styles. You can pick a different one for mobile.
Each step can carry a number or an icon: you choose among the included SVG icons or upload your own. You can also change the colors of each state (previous, current and next step), the text of each step, the labels of the Previous and Next buttons, the transition speed and the width of the container. The colors of the My Account and Order Received pages can be adjusted too, so the final journey doesn't look like another store.
Steps or fewer fields? How to decide if this plugin fits
It is a good choice if your checkout is already long and you need to guide customers without redoing the form. If the real problem is that you ask for too much data, start by cutting it: this plugin won't do that for you. It doesn't add payment methods or change shipping rates either, it only reorganizes what WooCommerce already shows. The login and registration built into checkout rely on YITH Easy Login for WooCommerce, so if you want them, make sure you have it.
How many steps should I have?
The fewer, the better. A sensible limit is four in total, merging billing with shipping and order with payment.
Can it look different on mobile?
Yes, you can choose a specific layout for the mobile version.
Does it force customers to register?
No. You can allow guest checkout, offer login or skip that step.
Does it work if I sell digital products?
Yes, you can disable the shipping step so it doesn't appear in the process.
