About AIO SEO News Sitemap Addon
Your news sitemap can return a 404 and be perfectly fine
On a Monday morning someone on your team opens the news sitemap address and finds a 404 error. Nobody published over the weekend. The first reaction is to look for what broke, change settings and write to whoever maintains the site. And nothing broke: if there is no content from the last 48 hours, the sitemap has nothing to show.
That is the difference from a regular sitemap. A news sitemap works like a two-day window, and every article that enters has an exit date. Google asks you to include only what was created in the last two days, so the file changes with each publication and empties when you stop publishing.
The News Sitemap feature in All in One SEO handles that window from WordPress, without writing XML. You decide which content types count as news and what your publication is called.
The 48-hour window moves on its own
- Automatic creation and updating of the sitemap with each new or changed article.
- Only content from the last 48 hours, to match what Google asks for in this type of sitemap.
- Dynamic generation: the sitemap is virtual, with no physical file to upload or maintain on the server.
- Control by content type and exclusion rules to decide which articles go in.
- Customizable publication name for your outlet.
The outlet name is written once and must match
Google requires the publication name to match exactly the one shown on your articles on news.google.com, leaving out anything in parentheses. If you leave the Publication Name field empty, All in One SEO uses the site title.
That is worth checking. If your WordPress title includes a slogan or a tagline for search engines, that text may end up as the outlet name. Type the name by hand, just as it appears in Google News, even if it feels redundant.
A product page is not news
A news sitemap must contain news articles only. The Include All Post Types checkbox puts everything in, so on a mixed site it is worth unchecking it and choosing the types one by one.
Pages are unlikely to be news, and other content types, such as products, should stay out too. If your blog mixes current events with evergreen guides, use the exclusion rules to send only the former.
This add-on does not give you access to Google News by itself either. It helps Google find your articles, and it does not write content. Nor does it replace the general sitemap.
Turning it on inside All in One SEO Pro
You need All in One SEO in its Pro edition or above, because this feature is part of those plans. With the plugin active:
- Go to Sitemaps in the All in One SEO menu and open the News Sitemap tab.
- Check that Enable Sitemap is on.
- Type the exact name of your outlet in Publication Name.
- Uncheck Include All Post Types and choose only the types that contain news.
- Submit the sitemap address to Google and Bing.
- Publish an article and open the sitemap to confirm it appears.
Do that last check right after publishing. If you look after two days without articles, you will see the 404 from the start.
If your SEO runs on another plugin, or you publish video
The essential base is All in One SEO Pro. If your site already works with Yoast, Yoast News SEO adds a news sitemap separate from the general one and lets you leave out categories, tags or content types from that same panel.
For the videos in your articles there is All in One SEO Video Sitemap, which submits them to search engines so they appear in video results.
How the sitemap behaves day to day
Why does my news sitemap return a 404 error?
That is expected if you published nothing in the last 48 hours. It also returns a 404 if the sitemap is disabled.
Does Google need to approve my site first?
It is not mandatory, although adding the site to Publisher Center and getting it approved is recommended, as it gives more control over content and branding.
Does installing this make me appear in Google News?
It gives you the news sitemap. Whether your articles appear is up to Google.
What happens to articles from a week ago?
They leave the news sitemap once they pass 48 hours. They stay published on your site.
Is a file created on the server?
No. The sitemap is generated dynamically, with no physical file.
Can I include only some content types?
Yes. By unchecking Include All Post Types you choose the types you want to send.
