About Astra Premium Sites
An imported template brings its plugins, and they stay with you
When you import a complete site from a template library, what you see is the design. What you do not see is that the importer also installs every plugin that template needs to work. Each complete site comes with the required plugins and with placeholder content.
That changes the question. You are not choosing a look, you are choosing a list of plugins you will maintain for years: updating them, checking that they do not clash and carrying their weight on every page. Two templates that look alike can leave you with very different installs underneath.
Astra Premium Sites is the premium edition of Starter Templates, from the same vendor as the Astra theme. Chosen well, it saves days of layout work. Chosen badly, it leaves a pretty site resting on pieces nobody decided to add.
The library and its builders
- More than 300 templates across more than 30 niches, with filters for free, premium and Signature.
- Three builders in full use: Elementor, Spectra and the block editor. The Beaver Builder templates are retired and only come back by enabling a filter in code.
- Three import levels: the complete site, a single page or one section or block pattern.
- Complete kits with pages, layouts and settings, plus placeholder content to replace with yours.
- AI builder that assembles a site from a description, once a ZipWP account is connected.
Importing overwrites what you already have
It does not respect what you already have. Importing a template overwrites existing pages. The safe route is doing it on a clean install and moving it to the real site afterwards.
It is not a theme either: the templates are designed with Astra for the best result, although they work with others.
How to read a template before importing it
Look at the builder first. If you already work with Elementor, a Spectra template forces you to learn another tool or live with two.
Count the plugins it asks for. Each one is one more thing to update. If the template installs a forms plugin and you already use another, you will end up with both.
Import in parts when you can. If you only like the home page, bringing in one page or one section avoids carrying a whole site you then have to take apart.
Installing it without clashing with the free Starter Templates
The base Starter Templates plugin needs WordPress 6.6 or later and PHP 7.4 or later. The premium edition is a different plugin from the free one on WordPress.org, and the free one must be deactivated or removed before using it. The recommended theme is Astra.
- Prepare a clean install, never the site that is already live.
- Deactivate the free Starter Templates if you had it and upload the premium one.
- Open the library under Appearance, Starter Templates, filter by your builder and check which plugins each option installs.
- Import, replace the placeholder content with yours and delete the pages you will not use before they get indexed.
What to pair it with, or use instead
The templates are designed with the Astra theme, which Astra Pro extends.
If you would rather start from a builder than from a template, Elementor Pro extends Elementor, one of the builders the library works with, and Kadence Blocks Pro extends the block editor with its own collection.
Questions before importing a template
Can I import a template into a site that already has content?
Existing pages get overwritten. The careful approach is to import on a clean install.
Does it install plugins on its own?
Yes. When importing a complete site it installs the plugins the template needs.
Do I need the Astra theme?
The templates are designed with Astra for the best result, although they work with other themes.
Can I bring in just one page?
Yes: you can import the complete site, a single page or one section.
Does the AI builder work without an account?
No. AI generated templates need a ZipWP account.
Can it run alongside the free Starter Templates?
No. The free one must be deactivated or removed before using the premium one.
