Putting music on a site without building a whole theme around it
There are two ways of having audio on WordPress. One is installing a complete music theme, which reorganises the entire site around it. The other is your site staying what it is (a studio site, a podcast, a school, a shop) and simply being able to place a player where needed.
AudioIgniter is the second: a playlist player placed on any page, without touching anything else.
What it does
- Unlimited playlists, with as many tracks as you want in each.
- Three formats: full, compact and sticky in the footer, which keeps playing as you browse.
- Automatic metadata: uploading an MP3 fills in the title and artist from the file itself.
- Control over what shows: the playlist, track numbers, cover art and names.
- Serves music, podcasts and radio streams.
What the paid version adds
Separate settings per playlist, shortcodes and widgets for placing it anywhere, batch uploading and track reordering. Plus lyrics per track, adjustable playback speed, a download link and an analytics dashboard.
Of all that, two things deserve attention. Batch uploading, because loading forty tracks one at a time is what makes a project get abandoned. And analytics, which tells you what gets listened to and what does not: for a podcast or a demo catalogue, that data is worth more than the player's design.
Before uploading anything: where the audio will live
This is the point that decides whether the project works, and it is not in the plugin.
Audio files are large and every play downloads them whole from your server. With four songs on a studio site, no problem. With a weekly podcast and a thousand listeners per episode, bandwidth use spikes and many shared hosts limit it or cut it off entirely.
For a small catalogue, hosting on your WordPress is correct and simplest. For a serious podcast, the usual approach is hosting the audio with a specialist service and having the player point there. The plugin supports both; the decision is yours and worth taking before you have a hundred episodes on top of you.
Requirements
It needs WordPress 6.3 or above. It works with WooCommerce if you also sell music, and the paid version integrates with the block editor, with Elementor and with WPBakery.
Alternatives in the catalogue
If what you want is a fuller player for a serious music project, Sonaar is the reference on that ground, with podcast support and music selling.
