About AutomatorWP BuddyPress Addon
A private group that accepts on its own is only as private as the rule that decides
Your community has a private group because you do not want just anyone in. Every request waits for someone to look at it, and when that person is busy, the applicant is left waiting. The temptation is to automate the answer, and then a question appears that nobody had asked.
If a rule accepts or rejects requests, the criterion you pick becomes the only thing protecting the group, which is why it is worth deciding before the automation.
This add-on connects AutomatorWP to BuddyPress. It includes the trigger "User requests to join a private group", the action "Accept user request to private group" and the opposite action to reject. A filter can sit between them, such as "User profile field matches with a value", which compares a profile field with the value you expect.
Triggers and actions for your community
The triggers cover four areas of BuddyPress:
- Profile: activating the account, changing the avatar or cover image, updating the information, filling in a specific field or being assigned a profile type.
- Friendships: sending, accepting or rejecting a request, and removing a friendship. Accepting, rejecting and removing have one trigger for the person who does it and another for the person on the receiving end.
- Messages and activity: writing on the activity stream, replying, favoriting, receiving a favorite, or sending and replying to a private message.
- Groups: creating, joining, leaving, inviting someone, being accepted, rejected, removed or banned, changing role in a group, and the "of a type" version of several of them.
The actions let you set a profile type, update a profile field, post an activity to the user or to a group, create a group, add or remove someone from a group, and start or stop a friendship. They also send notifications, private messages and emails to all members of a group or only to those with a certain role inside it.
A use idea: automatic welcome to a closed group
Create a profile field that the member fills in at registration, use "User requests to join a private group", add the filter that compares that field with a value and finish with the action that accepts the request.
Someone with a different value, or who leaves the field empty, does not meet the filter. If you do not want to leave them unanswered, create a second rule with the reject action or with a notice for the group administrator. It is just one way to use it; change it to suit your case.
Functions it does not include
The add-on works on top of BuddyPress and does not replace it: without it, the triggers and actions have nowhere to act. Among its functions there is no panel of its own for moderating requests; the decision lives inside each automation, in the filter you choose.
There are four filters: profile type, value of a profile field, and being in a group or not with a given role. All four are Pro level, as are the private group request, accepting, rejecting and much of the rest: check in the editor which ones you can choose.
Setting up the first automation
You need BuddyPress and AutomatorWP active on the same site. Then:
- Install and activate the add-on from the WordPress plugin installer.
- Open AutomatorWP in the side menu and create an automation.
- Choose a BuddyPress trigger, for example the request to join a private group.
- Add a filter if you want to limit who the rule applies to.
- Choose the action and activate the automation.
Communities and automation in the catalog
To automate with other integrations, see AutomatorWP Pro. For other uses of groups, look at BuddyPress Auto Join Groups. And if your community uses BuddyBoss, you can review BuddyBoss Platform Pro.
