About AutomatorWP - Link

The link text and the rule it runs are two separate settings

You put up a button that says "I want the guide". The user clicks it and expects a guide. But something else can happen behind that click, because the text that shows and the rule that runs are born in separate places and nothing forces them to match.

One click does two jobs configured separately, going to an address and running a rule, and the link text only describes what you write in it.

This add-on adds a single Pro-level trigger to AutomatorWP: "User clicks on a link". The link carries that trigger's identifier and whatever text you want. What happens next is decided by the action you attach to it in AutomatorWP, and where the link goes is decided by its address. That makes three pieces.

Two ways to create the link

To create the link there is a shortcode with these attributes:

  • trigger: the identifier of the trigger the click belongs to.
  • label: the link text; if you do not change it, "Click me!" appears.
  • href: the address the link goes to.
  • id, class and title: the usual link attributes.
  • target: the link's target attribute.

The shortcode is not the only way. Any element on the page works as a trigger link if it has the class automatorwp-link and a data-trigger attribute with the trigger identifier. That lets you turn a button or image you already designed with your page builder into a trigger, without replacing it with a new link.

The trigger appears inside the integration called AutomatorWP, not in one of its own.

A use idea: a button that does two things

Create a "Download the guide" button with the trigger's class and attribute, with the file's address as its destination. At the same time, attach to the click an action from another integration, for example tagging the user in your email tool.

The click on a link can be combined with actions from LifterLMS, MemberPress and WP Fusion.

If the action is something the visitor does not expect, say so on the button itself or next to it. It is a starting proposal; change it as you like.

Functions it does not include

The add-on has a single trigger. Among its functions there are no actions of its own: it has no filters of its own either. Everything that happens after the click depends on the actions of other AutomatorWP integrations.

It does not replace AutomatorWP either: it is a piece installed alongside it to add the click trigger.

Creating your first trigger link

You need AutomatorWP active on the site. Then:

  1. Install and activate the add-on with the WordPress plugin installer.
  2. Open AutomatorWP in the side menu and create a new automation.
  3. Choose "User clicks on a link" as the trigger and add the action you want.
  4. Copy the trigger identifier and use it in the shortcode's trigger attribute, or in the data-trigger attribute of your own element.
  5. Paste the shortcode into the page, and activate the automation.

More AutomatorWP pieces

If you are looking for the main plugin that runs the rules, see AutomatorWP Pro. To fire rules with events that arrive from outside your site, you can review AutomatorWP Webhooks. And from the same family, there is AutomatorWP Formatter.

Answers about AutomatorWP Link

Which trigger does it add?

Just one, "User clicks on a link", which fires when a link with its identifier is clicked.

Can I use a button I already have?

Yes. Just give it the automatorwp-link class and the data-trigger attribute with the identifier.

Can I change the link text?

Yes, with the shortcode's label attribute. If you do not change it, the text is "Click me!".

Does it bring actions of its own?

No. It is combined with the actions of the other AutomatorWP integrations.
