About Better Messages – Voice Messages Add-on
Some things take twenty seconds to explain out loud
And three written paragraphs, badly. That is why the voice note took over mobile messaging: it is faster for the sender and, often, clearer for the receiver. A community that only allows typing is asking its members for an effort nobody makes anywhere else any more.
This add-on brings voice messages to the Better Messages chat: the user holds the button, speaks, releases and it sends.
What Better Messages is
It is a private messaging system for WordPress that replaces or improves the site's chat, with one-to-one conversations, groups and rooms, reactions and file sending. It integrates with most community and learning platforms: BuddyPress, BuddyBoss, PeepSo, Ultimate Member, LearnDash, Tutor LMS, WooCommerce and its marketplaces, among many others.
The first thing to know
It is an add-on, it does not work on its own. It needs Better Messages installed and running. By itself it does not add chat to a site that has none: it adds voice to the chat already there.
And the site has to run on HTTPS. Browsers do not grant microphone access over unencrypted connections, so on a domain without a certificate the record button simply will not work.
What is worth planning for
The audio files are stored on your server. An active community that takes to voice notes generates a lot of small files, and that grows steadily in disk space and in backups. Worth deciding up front how long they are kept and reviewing it periodically, rather than when the disk warns you.
It is also worth separating this from features sometimes confused with it: instant delivery, voice and video calls, automatic transcription and end-to-end encryption belong to the version with a permanent connection server, which is a different thing.
Who it is for
Communities with active messaging, academies where the tutor answers questions, marketplaces with buyer and seller contact, and any site where private conversation is part of the product.

Does it work without Better Messages?
No. It is an add-on for it and needs the main plugin installed.
Do I need a security certificate?
Yes. Without HTTPS the browser will not allow microphone use, and recording never starts.
Where are the audio files stored?
On your own server, like any other file uploaded to the site.
Does it include voice calls?
No. These are recorded and sent messages. Live calls belong to the permanent connection version.
