The day a post takes off is the day your server gets tested
A viral site works toward one specific moment: a post that gets shared all at once and multiplies visits within a few hours. That is also the moment a modest host can run into trouble.
On a site like this, the server is chosen with the worst day in mind, not the monthly average. Boombox gives clear figures for doing that sum, in unique visitors per day:
- Shared hosting: up to 2,000, with possible trouble during traffic spikes.
- Budget VPS: up to 4,000, with as much RAM as possible.
- High-performance VPS: up to 6,000, with more than 4 GB of RAM.
- Dedicated server: more than 6,000, with at least 8 GB of RAM.
Boombox is a WordPress theme for viral content magazines, with rankings, reactions and open publishing.
Lists sorted by what your audience does
- Three rankings: Trending covers the last 24 hours, Hot the last 7 days and Popular the last 30.
- Four criteria: each ranking can be based on most voted, viewed, discussed or shared, with a minimum score to enter.
- Reactions after reading: 24 emojis and the option of adding your own in SVG. Signed-in users vote once per post, and others once every 24 hours.
- Points and leaderboards: the Gamify extension adds BuddyPress tabs and a leaderboard widget on top of myCRED.
- Others: dark mode, NSFW warning, GDPR options, an AMP version, WPML and right-to-left writing.
An open newsroom with Zombify, and its review queue
The package includes Zombify, which lets people create content from the public side: personality and trivia quizzes, polls, memes, stories, open and ranked lists, countdowns, video, audio, images and GIFs.
If you open participation, you will have reviewing to do, because contributors' posts stay pending until an administrator or editor publishes them. You can limit how many each contributor sends per day, and it is worth doing so before opening participation.
Only contributors or higher roles can create posts: a subscriber needs a change of role.
The limits you notice after building it
The ranking periods are fixed. They are 24 hours, 7 days and 30 days, and they cannot be changed even with custom code.
myCRED is not included. Gamify extends that plugin, so you have to install it yourself and set up the hooks for users to collect points.
Check the ads before counting on them. Placement in listings works with the WP QUADS plugin, and version 2.8.6 dropped support for the AdSense integration with WP QUADS PRO.
Its page builder is WPBakery. Elementor is not among the theme's compatibilities.
PHP, memory and the 16 demos
You need PHP 7.4 or higher, MySQL 5.5 or higher, the Apache mod_rewrite module and a PHP memory limit of 128 MB. Its compatibility covers WordPress 6.3.x to 7.0.x, and version 2.10.4 adds WordPress 7.1.3. It also lists BuddyPress 10.x, WooCommerce 9.x and 10.x, WPBakery and WPML.
There are 16 demos. These are the steps:
- Start from a clean installation, or make a backup if you are going to reset the database.
- Install the theme and activate the plugins, including Boombox Theme Extensions, which is required.
- Go to Appearance, Boombox Demo Import, choose a demo and click Import.
Other routes for a publication or a community
If your project looks more like a digital newspaper, JNews focuses on scale and monetisation, with a paywall, sponsored posts and AMP support.

Can visitors without an account submit content?
Creating posts with Zombify requires the contributor role or higher, and what contributors send waits for review by an administrator or editor.
Which plugins come in the package?
Among others, Zombify, Easy Social Share Buttons, WPBakery Page Builder and Gamify. Boombox Theme Extensions is required; those four are recommended.
