About Branded Login for BuddyPress

You run a social network on BuddyPress and you take care of the design of every screen, yet the moment someone wants to sign in or recover a password, they land on the generic WordPress screen with its own logo and colors. Right when a member decides whether to stay, the community stops looking like yours.

A member's first contact with your community is the sign-in screen

In a community, registration and sign-in are where the most people drop off and the least design effort goes: the profile, the activity wall and the groups get attention, but the front door is left as it comes. Branded Login for BuddyPress moves it to the front end and makes it part of your theme.

A walk through Branded Login for BuddyPress: from visit to new password

Step 1: the visitor tries to sign in

They type the standard WordPress login address, or click an old link pointing to wp-login.php. The plugin redirects them to a sign-in page on your own site, for example yoursite.com/login. They never see the standard WordPress screen.

Step 2: the sign-in page takes on your theme's look

You create a login.php file inside a folder called blogin in your theme and the plugin uses it as the template. That way you control the HTML and can have a different sign-in page in each theme. If you prefer to embed the form in another page, there is a login form shortcode. The screens carry standard CSS classes, which makes them easier to style.

Step 3: they forget their password

If they try to open the recovery option, they arrive at an address of your own such as yoursite.com/resetpass. That screen is also a template: you put a resetpass.php file in the same blogin folder. You can change the sign-in and recovery addresses to whatever you want, and customize the reset messages so the user is sent to a page on your site.

Step 4: they create a new password and sign back in

Users can choose their own password when resetting it and, once they finish, they are sent to the sign-in screen. Logging out is also handled on the front end, so with this plugin you don't need wp-login.php for your members' everyday use.

What it needs from you: BuddyPress and your own templates

This plugin is built for sites running BuddyPress. It doesn't come with a finished design: it provides the structure and the redirects, and you supply the look by editing the login.php and resetpass.php templates. If you're not comfortable editing theme files, you'll need someone who is. Nor is it a registration system or a social login: it handles sign-in, password recovery and logout.

If you already use Limit Login Attempts Reloaded, the plugin is compatible with it.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can anyone still see wp-login.php? No: any attempt to open it is redirected to your front-end sign-in page.
  • Can I change the /login address? Yes, both the sign-in and the password recovery addresses are customizable.
  • Does it work if each theme needs a different sign-in page? Yes, each theme can include its own templates in the blogin folder.
  • Can I put the form inside another page? Yes, using the login form shortcode.
  • Does it work without BuddyPress? It is designed for BuddyPress sites, so it isn't the tool for any other type of website.
