About BuddyPress Profanity Filter
Moderating a BuddyPress community by deleting posts gets exhausting
Someone posts an insult on the wall, another member sees it, a third quotes it in a comment, and by the time you log in to moderate the damage is done. In a community your members write the content, but the atmosphere carries your name.
BuddyPress Profanity Filter replaces the words you define.
Where BuddyPress Profanity Filter censors
It can be switched on or off per content type, so you can be strict on the wall and looser in other areas:
- Activity updates and activity comments.
- Subject and content of private messages.
- WordPress posts and comments.
- bbPress forum content, including group forums.
- BuddyPress extended profile fields.
It also works with the BuddyBoss platform and theme, and with BuddyPress Better Messages messages.
Your list, your rules: case, strict matching and symbols
Words are entered in the settings, separated by commas. From there you decide how the filter behaves:
- Case: case-sensitive or case-insensitive matching.
- Strict mode: matches only the standalone word or also fragments inside other words. It covers more, but with a higher risk of censoring innocent words that contain that fragment.
- Replacement: you choose the symbol that replaces the characters and how the match is replaced.
- Alert: you can get a notification when someone posts content with censored words, with a link to edit it, useful for spotting repeat offenders.
A word list doesn't understand context
The plugin replaces what is on your list and nothing else. The rest is up to you:
- Already solved: censoring the words on your list in activity, messages, forums and profiles, with alerts to the administrator.
- You cover it: insults and variants you haven't added. The list has to be maintained and expanded based on what you see in your community.
- You cover it: in BuddyBoss, the messages dropdown that opens from the header icon is not filtered.
- You cover it: what to do with repeat offenders. Warning, suspending or banning is still a moderator's job.
Lists of hundreds of words, not thousands
Matches are found with regular expressions, so a huge list slows the site down. The sensible range is hundreds of words. Start with the most serious ones, review the alerts and expand based on what you see. If you enable strict mode, test it first with everyday words to make sure it doesn't censor things you want to allow.

Can I censor private messages?
Yes, both the subject and the content of the message.
How do I add several words to the list?
Separate them with commas in the plugin settings, found in the WordPress Settings area.
Does it work with BuddyBoss?
Yes, with the platform and the theme. The exception is the header messages dropdown, which is not filtered.
Is there a word limit?
There is no fixed limit, but it's best to stay in the hundreds rather than thousands so the site doesn't slow down.
