Your pixel optimizes for revenue, but your margin is what pays the bills
If you sell with WooCommerce and pay for Meta ads, it's easy to fall into a trap: a 200 euro order and another 200 euro order with a different product count the same to the algorithm, even if one leaves you triple the profit of the other. Campaigns are optimized on the sale total, not on what you actually keep. Cost of Goods by PixelYourSite solves exactly that: it stores what each product costs you and calculates the profit of each order.
How to load the cost of your products
You have three ways, and you can mix them depending on the catalog:
- By hand: the cost on each product, with category rules or one global rule for the whole catalog.
- By CSV: you export the products, add the cost column and import it back.
- With the WooCommerce importer: the one the store already includes by default.
Once the cost is loaded, the plugin calculates the profit of new orders automatically. For earlier orders there is a script that calculates it retroactively, and a button lets you recalculate any specific order.
Reports and Meta events: where the profit shows up and what needs PixelYourSite
The cost and profit are saved with each order, so the reports follow your real numbers and not an estimate. A dedicated Cost of Goods section appears inside WooCommerce Analytics, next to the reports you already use.
The advertising side is the most interesting part: you can send the total as the Purchase event value and the profit as the value of a separate event called ProfitConversion. That second event fires only from the server, so the browser doesn't show it and your margin isn't visible to anyone who inspects the page. That way you see both revenue and profit in Ads Manager.
One important limit: this plugin only adds the cost and calculates the profit. To use that profit as an event value, or to see cost and profit in the reports by traffic source, landing page and UTM, you also need PixelYourSite (the reports by source belong to its Pro version). And event sending is for Meta.
Frequently asked questions about Cost of Goods
Does it work without PixelYourSite?
Yes for the basics: it adds the cost and calculates profit per order. No for sending profit as an event value or for the PixelYourSite reports.
Does it calculate profit for old orders?
Yes, with a script that runs over existing orders. New ones are calculated automatically.
Can I see which campaigns leave the most margin?
With PixelYourSite Pro and UTMs, yes: you can see cost and profit by traffic source, landing page and campaign.
Is the profit visible in the browser?
The ProfitConversion event is sent only from the server, so it is not visible in the browser.
Start with a CSV containing the cost of the whole catalog
What takes the most time is not the plugin, but gathering the real costs of your products. Before installing it, have a sheet at hand with the cost of each item (or at least per category). If the margin is similar within a category, a category rule saves you a lot of work and you can fine-tune the products that deviate later.
Then run the script for earlier orders and check the Cost of Goods report in WooCommerce Analytics before connecting anything to Meta. If the figures match your books, then enable sending the profit as the event value.
