About Currency Switcher For WooCommerce

A price in a foreign currency makes shoppers leave without buying

Someone lands from Berlin, Lagos or São Paulo, sees a price in a currency that isn't theirs and has to do the math in their head. Many people won't: they close the tab. And if they buy without understanding the exchange, the problem shows up later, on the card statement.

Currency Switcher For WooCommerce detects the visitor's country from their IP and shows prices in their currency from the first page. But the real business is something else: people who sell abroad often think converting is just applying an exchange rate, when it is actually deciding how much margin is at stake in each market. The plugin handles both.

Currency Switcher For WooCommerce: currencies, exchange rates and zones

You can add any combination of more than 190 currencies. For each one you set the name, symbol, position, thousands separator, decimal separator and number of decimals.

Exchange rates

You have two modes. With a fixed rate, you set the exchange rate and it doesn't move until you change it: useful if you need predictable margins. With an API rate, the plugin connects to a provider and updates hourly, daily or weekly. The available providers are Open Exchange Rates, Abstract API, Fixer API, Exchange Rate API and the free WPExperts API.

Pricing by zone and by currency

  • Pricing zones: you define countries or regions, assign them a currency and their own exchange rate, so you can be more aggressive in a price-sensitive market and keep a premium price in another.
  • Per-product pricing: instead of converting, you set the exact price of a product in a currency or in a zone.
  • Rounding and psychological prices: it avoids figures like €47.23 and turns them into 47 or 50, or ends them in .99 or .95.
  • Gateways by currency: you show only the payment methods you want for each currency.
  • Payment in the chosen currency: the customer pays in the currency they selected, and you can also change it at checkout based on the billing or shipping country.
  • Analytics: orders are synced to your base currency so WooCommerce Analytics reports stay consistent.

One limit to keep in mind: IP detection is not foolproof, and to improve accuracy the plugin integrates with MaxMind. If your market depends on getting the country right, check in the demo how it reacts with a VPN.

Where to put the switcher so people see it

The switcher can be placed as a widget in any widget area, as an item in the navigation menu or as a floating switcher that follows the scroll. It can also appear on the product page so customers can compare currencies before adding to cart. Several placements can be combined at once.

To identify the currency, you can show flags and choose between a symbol (£) or an ISO code (GBP).

Frequently asked questions about Currency Switcher For WooCommerce

Does it only convert the display or does it also charge in another currency?

It can charge in the currency the customer chose, not just display it.

Do I need an account with an exchange rate provider?

Not necessarily: the free WPExperts API is listed as an option with no limits and no cost. The other providers depend on their own service.

Can I set different prices by country?

Yes, through pricing zones with their own exchange rates, or with an exact price per product and currency.

What happens with sales reports?

Orders are converted to your base currency for WooCommerce Analytics, so you don't add euros to dollars.

Exchange rates are set up before you open the store

Before publishing, decide which currencies you will offer, whether you prefer a fixed or API rate and how often to update. Then review the payment gateways: not all of them accept every currency, so hide the ones that don't apply. Finish by testing a full order in each main currency, with rounding and .99 prices applied, to check that what the customer sees is what you charge.
