About Directorist Compare Listings

When buying an apartment means opening twelve tabs

Someone searching for an apartment in a directory opens a listing, jots the price down in a note, opens another one, goes back to the first because they no longer remember how many bedrooms it had, and ends up exhausted without having decided anything. Directorist Compare Listings puts an end to that back and forth: the visitor marks the listings they like and sees them together in a single table.

It is a Directorist extension, so it needs the Directorist plugin installed and running. It does not work on its own with any other kind of WordPress directory.

A real walkthrough: from six apartments to a decision

Picture a real estate directory and a buyer with several options in mind. Here is how their path would go:

  • Step 1, browse: on the all listings page they see a compare button on each ad and mark the ones they like, without leaving the listing.
  • Step 2, dig deeper: if they open an apartment's page, the button is there too. The same goes for related listings, so a casual visit can end up adding candidates.
  • Step 3, compare: they open the comparison page and see the ads side by side: price, rating, category and the custom fields you have created.
  • Step 4, decide: they rule out the one that does not meet their criteria and keep the one that does, without switching tabs.

The limit is part of the journey itself: a maximum of 5 listings can be compared at once. If the visitor tries to add one more, a limit exceeded notice appears. You can set that cap between 2 and 5.

Custom fields decide whether the table is useful

A table with only price and category is of little use in real estate. What makes a buyer really compare are the attributes that matter in your sector: square meters, bedrooms, floor, whether there is a garage or a lift. Directorist Compare Listings supports custom fields as a comparison attribute, so whatever you define in your listings shows up in the table.

This has a practical consequence: the quality of the comparison depends on how well the listings are filled in. Define few fields, but make them mandatory and clear.

Where the button appears and where it does not

You can show the compare button in these places:

  • The all listings page.
  • A single listing page.
  • Related listings.
  • The user dashboard and the author profile.

There is also an option to exclude the button on specific pages, useful if you do not want to clutter a landing page or a lead capture page. The extension is fully translatable and works on mobile.

Frequently asked questions about Directorist Compare Listings

Does it work without the Directorist plugin?

No. It is an extension and requires Directorist to be active.

How many listings can be compared?

Up to 5 at a time. You can lower the maximum to 2, 3 or 4 in the settings.

Is it only for real estate?

No. The clearest example is a real estate agency, but it compares any listing in your directory by price, rating, category or custom fields, as long as they have comparable data.

Can I hide the button on some pages?

Yes, there is an option to exclude it on the pages you choose.

Does it compare listings from different categories with different fields?

Check in the demo how the table looks when ads do not share the same custom fields, because that is where a poorly structured directory shows the most.
