About Download Monitor WordPress Plugin

A PDF in the media library tells you nothing

Uploading a file to the media library and pasting the link works until someone asks: has anyone downloaded it?, who?, is the old version of the catalog still circulating? Download Monitor logs what happens after the click.

Here every download is logged with user data, IP address and date and time, so you can see which files really move your audience.

Versions, permissions and alerts: how each file is controlled

  • Versions under a single link: you keep several versions of a file and whoever clicks the link always gets the latest one.
  • Access control: role-based permissions and password protection for sensitive files.
  • Email alerts: notifications when a file is downloaded, with rules configurable per file.
  • Reports: visual dashboards and exportable data (for example, CSV statistics to send to a client) with trends, top files and activity per user.
  • Organization: categories and tags to sort files, and shortcodes to place download buttons, file lists or libraries wherever you want.

Download Monitor as a document library and a contact collector

If your case is a catalog or a document archive, the Document Library Manager add-on lets you build grouped listings with search and filters, instead of an endless list of links.

Users report very specific combinations: Gravity Forms forms to gate white papers with a sales follow-up afterwards, Mailchimp to sync members, Google Drive to move the PDF library off the server while keeping access rules, or a teaching materials platform with annual subscriptions and a download limit per role. These setups add other plugins: Download Monitor provides file control, not everything else.

Decide whether Download Monitor is enough or you need more

It is a good choice if your priority is controlling and measuring downloads. Think twice in these cases:

  • If you need subscriptions, memberships or recurring payments, it is usually combined with other plugins; don't expect it to solve everything on its own.
  • Features such as asking for an email before downloading, the document library with filters or the enhanced metrics are specific add-ons. Check that what you need is included in what you are going to install.
  • Logging IP addresses and user data involves personal data: review your privacy policy before turning it on.

Can I know who downloaded each file?

Yes, the log stores the user data, IP address, file type and timestamp, and it can be exported.

Can I restrict a file to certain users?

Yes, with role-based permissions or a password.

What happens to the links if I upload a new version?

They stay valid: versions live under the same link and users receive the most recent one.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. No coding is required and files are inserted with shortcodes.
