About Easy Digital Downloads All Access
An all-access pass can also be metered and narrowed
You sell single downloads and one day you offer a pass that gives access to everything. The customer buys it, returns to your store and on every product finds a download button where the buy button used to be. If you do not narrow it, that pass covers every product in the store.
A pass need not be all or nothing: the download cap per period and the categories or variations it covers are what separate one tier from another.
Easy Digital Downloads All Access is an EDD extension that sells access passes to your catalog. Each pass has its own duration, download limit and scope, and you can create as many tiers as you need.
What defines each pass
- Duration: from one day to access with no end date.
- Downloads: unlimited or capped, with the cap resetting daily, weekly, monthly or yearly.
- Scope: the whole store, certain categories or only some price variations.
- Tiers: you can create unlimited tiered passes, such as gold, silver and bronze.
- Per-customer adjustment: a pass's values can be changed for a specific customer.
- Early renewal: the customer can renew before it expires.
A logged-in pass holder sees the Download button where Buy Now normally appears. You can keep selling each product on its own alongside the pass, or turn on All Access Only mode so products download only with a pass. An offer for the pass can appear beside any purchase button, and a login link beside each product for existing members.
The plugin includes shortcodes that wrap content, such as an embedded video or a text, and hide it from anyone without a pass. Another shows something only to people who do not have one, another lists only the products the customer can download with their pass, and another displays their pass details, such as downloads left.
Certain discount codes can require a valid pass. You can also turn any store category into a bundle for sale without re-uploading files, and those bundles have no file limit. One tool converts purchases made before installation into passes, and another migrates members and subscriptions from Restrict Content Pro.
A category pass and a full pass, to test
One combination you can build with the features above: a pass limited to one category, capped at one download per week, and a higher tier that covers the store with no cap. It comes from joining features described separately, so test it with a test customer account before offering it. Check what that account sees beside a product in the category and beside one outside it, and what happens when the cap runs out or the pass expires.
What needs another extension
Several functions depend on separate pieces:
- Automatic renewal: needs EDD Recurring Payments.
- Splitting profits among vendors: needs EDD Commissions, and the calculation weights which vendor owns the products the customer downloaded.
- Master licenses with prorated upgrades: need EDD Software Licensing.
Getting it running
It requires Easy Digital Downloads installed and active. To get started:
- Install the plugin with the WordPress installer and activate it.
- Review the global pass settings.
- Create a pass and define its duration, download limit and scope.
- Decide whether products are also sold on their own or only with a pass.
- Test the purchase with a test customer and review their pass under Customers > All Access Passes.
Alternatives for selling access
If your priority is recurring billing, look at EDD Recurring Payments, which the pass uses to renew itself. To restrict content without selling a pass, check EDD Content Restriction. If your members are on Restrict Content Pro, All Access includes a tool to migrate them.
