About External Images

Importing a supplier catalogue with thousands of products usually stalls on the same thing: downloading every photo, creating its attachment and generating thumbnails. The process drags on, the server struggles and the uploads folder keeps growing, even though the images are already published on another server.

Your affiliate store does not need to own the photos

Whoever builds a store from supplier feeds or affiliate networks works with someone else's catalogue: the photos live on the merchant's server or on a CDN, and what matters to you is that they appear next to your price and your link. Copying them to your disk means paying for storage for a file that already exists and may also change at the source. External Images stores only the remote URL in post meta and renders the image from its source.

From feed to product page with External Images, step by step

Here is the path of an imported catalogue, with what the plugin solves and what you should know at each step:

  • The URL comes in, not the file. You enter the featured image URL and the gallery URLs in the plugin's fields, by hand or with your importer. Super Speedy Imports maps image columns automatically; WP All Import and Datafeedr have their own compatibility paths. Galleries can be separated by pipes or commas, just as many feeds provide them.
  • WordPress thinks it has an image. The plugin synthesises the image and attachment data through the standard WordPress and WooCommerce filters, without creating a real attachment. In direct mode nothing enters the Media Library and no thumbnails are generated. The limit: there is no true attachment ID, so a plugin that insists on a Media Library record may not see the image.
  • The browser loads it from its source. Dimensions are read from the URL where possible, placeholders preserve the layout and the exact size is corrected once loading finishes. These images carry no srcset or native WordPress lazy loading, because they are not variants generated on your server.
  • Galleries and variations keep working. You can use an external featured image, a product gallery, variation images and full per-variation galleries, with dedicated handling for the lightbox and the hover magnifier. External URLs are also added to the Open Graph tags and to WooCommerce product structured data.

Common questions from people arriving with a feed in hand

Is there a cap on images?

There is no limit on external images, because none are downloaded or stored.

Can I bring them to my server later?

With External Images the image stays external. To publish first and download later into the Media Library there is Delayed Image Import, a different workflow. Choose it if you eventually need local attachments, responsive image metadata or independence from the source server.

Does it work with my theme?

There is dedicated handling for Divi, Houzez, Woodmart, Property Hive, Jetpack Photon and two WooCommerce variation gallery plugins. With other themes, what matters is that they use the standard image filters; check it in the demo before loading the whole catalogue.

Is it only for products?

No: it also supports galleries and other WordPress content types, for example property listings in real estate themes.

If the source server fails, your photos fail with it

In direct mode, the image's server becomes part of your page load. Its downtime, hotlink protection, rate limits and CORS policy are outside your control unless you enable local proxy caching. If the source is HTTP, the plugin tries to upgrade it to HTTPS when the host supports it and, if not, serves it through a proxy to avoid insecure content warnings.

Proxy All Images changes the model: it writes a local cache under uploads/external-images and, for now, has no maximum size or automatic deletion. It only caches PNG, JPG, JPEG, GIF and SVG; WebP and AVIF are served directly from the source. Both the HTTPS check and the cache need outbound HTTP connections from your server.
