About Extra Fees for WooCommerce
Charge what it costs you to sell, without raising the price of everything
Every order drags along costs that the product price does not cover: the payment gateway commission, shipping to a complicated area, the work of preparing a small order. Raising prices to cover them punishes every customer, and absorbing them eats into your margin without you noticing until the end of the month. Extra Fees for WooCommerce lets you pass each cost on where it originates, with fees that are added only when the condition you define is met.
A real walkthrough: from the gateway commission to the customer's cart
Imagine a store that pays more commission on one gateway than another. This is how you would solve it step by step:
- You choose the fee type. The plugin works with four: product fee, payment gateway fee, order fee and shipping method fee.
- You set the amount. For the gateway you can use a fixed amount, a percentage of the cart subtotal or of the order total, or a percentage plus a fixed part. If the percentage falls below a minimum, you can charge a minimum fee (this applies to gateway and shipping).
- You set the conditions. Minimum and maximum order range, specific products or categories, users or roles, country or region, and date ranges for gateway and shipping fees.
- You add a description. It appears in a pop-up in the store, so the customer understands why they are paying that fee.
- The customer sees it at the right moment. The gateway fee is added when the customer chooses that gateway at checkout; the shipping fee, only if they select that method.
The key point: the fee is not charged upfront to everyone. Whoever pays with the cheaper gateway sees nothing, and that is exactly what nudges them to choose it.
Order fees to push the basket upward
The order fee applies when the cart subtotal falls within the range you set. You can create several rules with different ranges and decide what happens if an order matches more than one: the first or the last matching rule wins. Used wisely, a fee that disappears once a certain amount is exceeded encourages adding one more product. Of course, the customer will see it in the cart, so the description should be clear and the range reasonable: an excessive fee on small orders can also cause abandoned carts.
Product fees, with limits you should know
The product fee appears on the product page and is repeated in the cart, checkout and thank-you page, under the item name. You can show it separately next to the total to pay or add it to the original price. It supports a fixed amount or a percentage of the price, several fees on the same product, filters by product, category or tag, calculation for a single unit only, and adjustment based on the discount applied by coupons. If you have many products, bulk update saves you from configuring them one by one.
A practical detail: the taxes on fees are calculated with their own tax-rate option, so review that setting with your advisor before publishing. And on WooCommerce Subscriptions renewal orders, product and order fees are restricted; only the gateway and renewal-order fees are charged, so if you sell subscriptions check each case carefully.
Compatibilities and control afterwards
- It works with the WooCommerce cart and checkout blocks.
- Fees can also be applied to manual orders.
- It is compatible with WooCommerce Subscriptions, with the Avalara Avatax plugin and, for the product fee, with YITH WC Quote.
- It includes reports so you can see the fees you have collected.
