About FileBird - WordPress Media Library Folders
A WordPress media library starts out convenient and ends up as an endless list where finding a logo from two years ago takes longer than recreating it. With FileBird, that list gets virtual folders, drag and drop, and a hierarchical view inside the media panel itself.
Why a messy library costs more than it seems
Whoever runs a website doesn't lose time uploading files, they lose it searching for them, duplicating them because they can't find the original, or wondering which version was the good one. The more people work on the same installation, the worse it gets: everyone names and stores things their own way. FileBird doesn't change that habit, but it gives every item a place and makes it visible at a glance.

If you manage client websites
Folders support colors (more than 16 presets or your own HEX), so finding the one you want is a matter of looking. You can also download an entire folder as a ZIP to deliver it or keep a copy.
If you run a WooCommerce store
Besides images, the plugin lets you organize products, coupons and other content types into folders.
If you edit a blog with years of history
A counter of new files per folder shows you what was uploaded recently. And since the hierarchy keeps files grouped, it's easier to review the alt text and file names of a specific folder.
If you work with a page builder
When inserting an image from Elementor or other builders, you browse your folders inside the same interface, without leaving for the library. Compatibility also covers Gutenberg, Divi, Beaver Builder, WPBakery, Thrive Architect and Slider Revolution, plus WPML and Polylang for multilingual sites.
Features that change your day-to-day work
- Unlimited folders: they are virtual, so creating, renaming, moving or deleting a folder doesn't touch the files' real path.
- Upload straight to a folder: you pick the destination in the dropdown of the upload dialog and several files go there at once.
- Multiple selection: with the bulk select button you mark files and drag them to a folder.
- Gutenberg gallery block: you choose one or more folders and the gallery shows their content, with settings for columns, link, caption and cropping.
- Safe deletion: if you delete a folder, its files move to «Uncategorized», they aren't lost.
- SVG support: it allows SVG uploads with sanitization, without another plugin.
- Migration: it imports folders and categories from Enhanced Media Library and Media Library Folders.
You can also resize or collapse the side panel and choose between three folder tree styles: the default one, Windows 11 and Dropbox.
What happens to your files and URLs
Folders are a visual layer. Paths inside wp-content/uploads don't change, and moving an image to another folder doesn't alter how it looks on the site or its address. After installing, everything you already had appears under «All Files».
You need a separate add-on to show folders to the public
The plugin organizes the admin area. If you want visitors to see a list of PDFs or documents with folder navigation, you need the Document Library addon, which is a separate add-on. To connect with Google Drive or Dropbox you also need the FileBird Cloud plugin. Some features, such as ZIP folder download or the Divi gallery module, are labeled as Pro. In the free version, folders for pages and posts support only one level.
Common questions before installing it
Are my files moved on the server when I organize them?
No. Folders are virtual and the original path stays the same.
Does it affect images that are already published?
No. They keep displaying the same on the site because their path doesn't change.
Can I assign a folder when uploading a file?
Yes: you choose the folder in the upload dialog dropdown or use the side tree.
What happens if I delete a folder?
The files move to «Uncategorized», they aren't deleted.
Is it useful for more than images?
Yes: documents, videos, audio, pages, posts and custom post types.
