About Flexible Product Fields PRO

What the customer wants written on the product

A bracelet with an engraved name, a bouquet with a dedication, business cards with a company's details, a stamp with a line of text. In every one of those cases a piece of information is missing that only the buyer has, and without somewhere to put it the sale ends in an exchange of emails, or simply does not end at all.

This plugin adds the fields where the customer writes that to the product page, and lets you charge for it.

What field types there are

  • Text and text area, for engravings, dedications and gift messages.
  • Select, checkboxes and options with images or colours, for choosing finish, typeface or material while seeing it.
  • File upload, for the logo or photo that has to be printed.
  • Date, time, number, email and colour picker, for everything else.

Charging for personalisation

Each field can carry a fee, fixed or as a percentage of the order, added to the price automatically. Gift wrapping costs three, engraving five, the special typeface two. The customer sees it before adding to the cart and it appears itemised on the order.

There is conditional logic too: a field appears only if the customer chose a particular option in another. That keeps the form from overwhelming anyone, revealing what is relevant as the customer decides.

Where it applies

Field groups are placed above or below the add to cart button, and assigned to all products, to specific products, to variations, to categories or to tags. It works the same with simple and variable products.

Two things worth planning for

The files customers upload. A logo sent at 72 dots per inch is no good for printing, and that gets discovered while preparing the order, not on receiving it. Worth stating in the field itself which format and resolution are needed, and checking the file before treating the order as good.

Returns. In the European Union, goods made to the consumer's specifications fall outside the fourteen-day right of withdrawal. That is an advantage for the seller, but only if it is clearly disclosed before purchase. Worth saying so on the product page itself, next to the personalisation field, as well as in the terms.

Alternatives in the catalogue

The direct alternative is PPOM, which does the same thing (adding fields and options to the product page, with a fee) from a different approach. Worth comparing both demos with your specific case in front of you, because the difference is in the detail: how options display, how the price gets calculated and how the data reaches the order.

If besides personalising you want the customer to see their design assembled (a t-shirt, a mug, a card), that is another category: a product designer, which is a separate and considerably more expensive plugin to set up.

And if what you want to customise is not the product but the checkout step, the right tool is the checkout field editor, which adds and hides fields in the cart with conditional logic.
