About Formidable Forms API Addon
One key for all your connections
You give your key to another of your sites, a CRM script and an analytics tool so they can read your entries. They work, and you forget about them. Months later you suspect the key leaked and renew it as a precaution.
Your site has one API key, and renewing it makes every connection that uses it stop working until each one is updated.
Formidable Forms API is the add-on that opens your forms to external services through the WordPress REST API. It sends entries to other sites and services, and also lets you create, read, update and delete entries, forms and fields from outside. Authentication uses Basic Authorization with your key.
What you can send and receive
- HTTP methods: POST, GET, PUT, PATCH and DELETE. POST creates entries, GET retrieves them, PUT and PATCH update them and DELETE removes them.
- Triggers: the action can run when an entry is created, updated, deleted or imported, or saved as a draft.
- Send API Data action: configured in the form settings, under Actions & Notifications, with the receiving site's URL, its key, field mapping and the method.
- Zapier in both directions: sends entries to Zapier and creates new entries from a Zap.
- Forms on other sites: you can embed them on a non-WordPress site with the script from the Embed modal.
Forms with payment actions, reCAPTCHA fields or plain permalinks load in an iframe instead of through the script.
Where the key lives and how it is protected
The key is 19 characters long and is stored in the WordPress database. It is generated when the add-on is activated and lives under Formidable > Global Settings > API, where a refresh icon creates a new one. Before sending or receiving calls, it is advisable to enable SSL (HTTPS).
To extend the behavior there are hooks with code examples: custom headers, other authentication types and saving the response data into form fields.
A new key with three connections, and how to diagnose them
A test you can build on a staging site: three external connections calling your site with your key, and the key renewed. Sends through Send API Data use the receiving site's key, not yours. It is your own combination and not a function described that way. Note which connections stop responding and what it costs to update them one by one. With that list you will know what renewing the key costs in production and whether you need a record of your connections.
To diagnose, check that yoursite.com/wp-json/ is accessible and use Postman to test basic authentication. The Formidable Logs add-on shows when calls fire, where they go and what response they return.
Getting it running
It requires Formidable Forms installed and active. To get started:
- Go to Formidable > Add-Ons and activate the add-on.
- Enable SSL (HTTPS) on your site.
- Copy the key from Formidable > Global Settings > API.
- In the form, open Settings > Actions & Notifications and add the Send API Data action.
- Enter the receiving site's URL and key, map the fields and choose the method.
