About ForumWP

An empty forum scares people off more than having no forum

Setting up a forum on your site usually goes wrong in one of two ways: outdated software that clashes with the rest of the site, or a community nobody visits because taking part feels awkward. And there is something that gets explained too little before you start: the work of a forum is not installing it, it is keeping conversations alive and clean. An unanswered thread or an uncleared spam post weighs more than any missing feature.

ForumWP is a forum plugin for WordPress designed so the technical side gets in your way as little as possible: it does not require coding knowledge and it adapts to the website you already have.

ForumWP inherits your theme and offers two ways to view conversations

The base includes forums, topics, replies, user profiles, settings, emails, and user login and registration. What you notice most when using it:

  • Theme integration: it takes the buttons, fonts and colors from your theme, so the forum looks like part of the site and not an add-on.
  • Different layouts: you can use the traditional forum by categories, a modern latest topics view, or both at once.
  • Smoothness and mobile: conversations move along without reloading the page each time, and the design is made for phones and tablets.
  • Emails: email notifications for users and for moderators.
  • Moderation: topics and replies are managed from the front-end and from wp-admin.

What only the Pro version includes

Marking a topic as solved, private replies, votes, photos, post moderation before publishing, likes, bookmarks and subscriptions are Pro extras. If your forum is going to be for support or Q&A, "solved" and votes matter a lot: do not count on them in the free version. What the base includes is a functional forum, without a reputation system.

Common questions before setting up the forum

Do I need to know how to code?

No. The plugin is designed to be configured without touching code.

Will it look good on mobile?

It is built to work on phones and tablets. Even so, test it with your specific theme before announcing it.

Can I moderate without entering the WordPress dashboard?

Yes. You can moderate topics and replies from the front-end and also from wp-admin.

Can I show only the latest topics view?

Yes. You can choose the traditional layout, the latest topics view, or combine both.

Can users mark a reply as the solution?

Only with the Pro version, just like votes and private replies.

From the same team as Ultimate Member

ForumWP is developed by the team behind Ultimate Member. That is useful to know if you value a forum made by people with experience in WordPress communities, but do not assume both plugins connect with each other.

Before opening ForumWP to the public, seed the first threads

Start with a few forums with clear names: it is easier to expand than to merge empty categories. Publish the first topics yourself and answer the first messages, because nobody wants to be the first to speak in an empty room.

  • Decide whether your community needs the traditional view, the latest topics view, or both.
  • Test the emails with a test user account to see what each person receives.
  • Assign who will moderate from day one.
  • Check how the forum looks with your theme's colors and buttons, on desktop and mobile.
