About GeoDirectory Marketplace

Your businesses want to sell, and your directory only displays them

Once a local directory starts getting traffic, listed businesses ask the same thing: "can I sell my products from here?". Without an answer, they end up sending customers to their own website, a social network or a phone number, and your directory stays a shop window. Building a shop by hand for each listing doesn't scale when you have dozens of businesses.

There is also a deeper problem: a business only keeps its presence in a directory while it sees that it brings customers. If it can sell inside the directory itself and you earn a commission on each sale, your income depends on the business selling, and both of you pull in the same direction.

GeoDirectory Marketplace turns every listing into a shop

This plugin connects GeoDirectory, WooCommerce and MultiVendorX so that a listing owner can create and sell products from their own listing. This is how it works in practice:

  • Every listing is a shop: the owner sells their products from their listing.
  • Commission for the admin: you, as the directory owner, can earn a commission on each sale made.
  • Proximity search: users can search for products by name and buy from the shop closest to their location.
  • Compatible vendor plugins: besides MultiVendorX, it works with Dokan, WCFM (WooCommerce Frontend Manager) and WC Vendors Pro.

It is an add-on, not a ready-made shop

It doesn't work on its own. It needs GeoDirectory as the base and WooCommerce. If you already have a directory without WooCommerce, you will need to add those pieces. Proximity search for products doesn't appear by itself either: it should be configured explicitly and tested before opening the directory to the public.

Common questions before building a directory with shops

Can I charge vendors a commission?

Yes, the plugin is designed so that the directory administrator earns a commission on each sale made by listing owners.

Does it work for any type of product?

The product's own examples range from restaurant menus to handmade items, coupons or second-hand clothes.

Which vendor plugin should I choose?

You can use MultiVendorX, Dokan, WCFM or WC Vendors Pro. Choose the one you know best.

Does it replace GeoDirectory?

No. It is an add-on: without GeoDirectory there are no listings to turn into shops.

Directories where selling inside the listing makes sense

The model fits when the buyer wants something close to them or from a specific seller:

  • A restaurant directory where each venue sells dishes from its menu for delivery or pickup.
  • An Etsy-style marketplace for owners who sell handcrafted items.
  • A directory of bars or wineries that sell coupons for their happy hours.
  • A thrift store directory where charitable organizations sell used clothes.
  • A directory of individuals selling used toys, clothes or vinyl records.

If your directory is purely informational, with no transactions, this plugin adds complexity you won't use.

Three base plugins before opening the first shop

Order matters: get GeoDirectory running with its listings, install WooCommerce and choose the vendor plugin before activating GeoDirectory Marketplace. Then make a test purchase with a dummy listing and check three things: that the owner sees their product dashboard, that the commission is calculated as you expect, and that proximity search returns the closest shop. Only then invite the first businesses.
