About GetPaid Square Payments
Before the features, check which country your Square account is in
If you already take payments with Square in your store, using it on the website too seems logical: same provider, same account, one dashboard less. But with a gateway there is a question that comes before all the others, and it has nothing to do with what the add-on does: whether it works where your business is registered.
GetPaid Square Payment Gateway works only in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom. Square also operates in Spain, France and Ireland, but those countries are not on the add-on's list, and neither is any country in Latin America. With a payment gateway, the country of the account decides before the feature list does. If yours is among the five, this add-on connects GetPaid with Square. If it is not, it is worth looking at another gateway from the start.
What the add-on brings to GetPaid
- Square payments for the items you sell with GetPaid.
- GetPaid payment forms compatible with this gateway.
- Recurring payments for subscriptions.
- ACH bank transfer and Square gift cards.
- Strong Customer Authentication (SCA).
- Customer profile in your Square Dashboard, if you turn that option on.
- Test mode with its own sandbox credentials.
- Verified notifications using the Square signature key, and renewals recorded only when the amount and currency match the subscription.
Where it fits within GetPaid
GetPaid is an online payments and invoicing plugin. With it you create invoices that you send for the customer to pay online, payment forms on a page of their own and items with a one-time fee or a subscription. This add-on is the piece that collects all of that through Square.
It suits a service business that invoices its customers and wants to gather website payments in its Square account. It also works for periodic fees, since renewals go through the same gateway.
What stays outside this gateway
It does not work alone. It is an add-on for GetPaid and does nothing without that plugin. It does not work for WooCommerce or other sales systems either.
It does not replace your Square account. You need to have it open and active, and take the credentials from it.
It does not connect your physical store with the website. Among its features there is no catalog or inventory sync with Square. What it shares with your dashboard is the payments and, if you turn it on, the customer profile.
What it needs and how it is configured
It needs WordPress 6.2 or higher, GetPaid installed and active, and a Square account in one of the five countries.
- Install and activate GetPaid and this add-on.
- Go to GetPaid, Settings, Payment Gateways, Square.
- Copy the App ID, Access Token and Location ID from the Square Dashboard.
- Turn on Test Mode, add the sandbox credentials and make a payment with the Square test cards.
- Turn off Test Mode, because if it stays on, real payments will not work.
- Make a small real payment and check that it appears in Square.
Other ways to get paid depending on what you sell
If you sell digital products, Easy Digital Downloads Pro is built for that and takes cards through Stripe and Square. If yours is appointments with BookingPress, there is a Square add-on for BookingPress. To collect payments from forms with another gateway, Gravity Forms Stripe takes one-time payments, subscriptions and donations.
Within GetPaid, GetPaid Advertising lets you sell ads on your own site.
Questions about GetPaid Square
Does it work if my business is in Spain?
Spain is not among the add-on's five countries, even though Square operates there. Do not count on it.
Does it work for Mexico or the rest of Latin America?
No. It only works in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom.
Does it support subscriptions?
Yes. Recurring payments work with GetPaid subscription items.
Can I test it without charging for real?
Yes. Test Mode uses the Square sandbox credentials. Remember to turn it off before you start charging.
Where do I find the credentials?
In your Square Dashboard: App ID, Access Token and Location ID, for both the live and the test environment.
