About Gravity Forms File Upload Pro

Crooked, huge or wrong photos: the problem starts in the upload field

Asking for a photo or a document in a form usually ends the same way: you get a vertical image where you expected a square one, a file of several megabytes that nobody can publish as is, or a PDF that wasn't the one the person meant to send. Then you have to write emails, ask for the file again or retouch it by hand. Gravity Forms File Upload Pro moves that work to the moment of upload, when the person filling in the form can still fix it.

A profile photo form with Gravity Forms File Upload Pro, step by step

Picture a directory, a members site or an application form where each person uploads their photo. Here is how it plays out:

  • You enable the upgrade on a field you already have. It works on existing upload fields, including single file ones, so you don't rebuild forms. If you ever deactivate it, the fields go back to the basic Gravity Forms upload.
  • The person drags in the file. They can drop several at once, see the upload progress and, before submitting, a preview if it's an image or an icon if it's another file type. That way they confirm they picked the right one.
  • The cropper opens. With the require crop option, the cropper launches by itself when the image is chosen and the file isn't uploaded until the person makes a selection. If you set a 1:1 ratio, every profile photo comes out square.
  • You set the limits. You can ask for exact, minimum or maximum dimensions. With a single measure, the other is calculated respecting the image's ratio: an 800x600 image with an exact width of 400 ends up at 400x300. With a minimum, the image can't be cropped below it.
  • The image prepares itself. It is rotated automatically if needed and optimized according to your cropping settings.

Two limits to know right away: cropping works with .png and .jpg images, not every format; and circular cropping isn't a button in the panel, it has to be enabled with a code filter. Also, even if the person sees a circle, the image is saved as a square in the entry. That's a useful choice: you can change how it's displayed later without recropping everything.

If the crop goes wrong, nobody has to upload again

You click the uploaded image, adjust the framing and save. The original is kept, so you can crop again until it's right.

You can also sort files by dragging them (useful for galleries or portfolios), limit how many are accepted and how large each can be. Validation happens on the spot, not after pressing submit.

Questions before installing File Upload Pro

Do I have to create new fields?

No. It applies to upload fields you already have, both multiple file and single file ones.

What happens if I deactivate it?

The fields go back to working with the basic Gravity Forms upload, without breaking.

Does it work for documents, not just photos?

Yes: files that aren't images are shown with an icon. However, cropping and ratios only make sense with images.

Does it accept HEIC photos from an iPhone?

It's a case worth testing before launching the form: upload a real iPhone photo in the demo and check what happens.

An add-on for Gravity Forms, not a separate form

It needs Gravity Forms to work: it improves the upload field, it doesn't replace it or add file management of its own. It is enabled field by field from the settings, so you can leave some forms as they are. If your case is a profile, a portfolio or an application with documents, it's a direct improvement. If you need to edit images beyond cropping, it isn't the right tool.
