About Gravity Forms GP Popups
A popup that doesn't know when to interrupt ends up scaring visitors away
Popups have a bad reputation for a reason: they show up at the wrong time, cover what the visitor came to read and repeat on every page. If the form also lives in an external tool, you end up with styles that don't match your site and data split across two places. Gravity Forms GP Popups starts from what you already have: any Gravity Forms form can open as a popup, without rebuilding it.
The person who installs this is usually someone who already captures data with forms and wants more submissions without losing control of the experience. Here the business isn't in the popup but in the timing: the same form works or annoys depending on when and to whom you show it.
Four ways to trigger the popup and one route through code
GP Popups includes four built-in triggers, and you can also open the popup from JavaScript:
- Delay: opens after a set time on the page, in seconds or milliseconds.
- Click: opens when one or more elements you specify with a CSS selector are clicked.
- Exit intent: opens when the cursor moves near the top of the page; you can adjust the sensitivity in pixels.
- Scroll: opens after scrolling a specific amount, in pixels or percentage.
- Hash: opens when the URL includes a specific fragment, useful for linking directly to a popup.
Page targeting rules complete the control: you can decide where each popup appears based on content, URL, user and authentication, device and browser, schedule, traffic percentage or even your own JavaScript.
Popup design: window, fullscreen, corner or banner mode
In GP Popups, the look depends on the display mode. There is the classic centered popup with a backdrop, fullscreen, corner and banner. In each one you adjust size (pixels, percentage, vh or vw, or automatic), animation (fade, slide or scale) and, depending on the mode, position and backdrop with color, transparency and blur.
For closing, you can combine several options: click on the backdrop, the ESC key, a close button, automatic close after submission (with a configurable delay) and a dismiss link with the text you want.
If you want to go further, the appearance tab lets you write CSS and HTML around the form. You have the {form}, {form_title} and {dismiss_link} tags, and the [hide_if_submitted] and [show_if_submitted] shortcodes to change the content after a valid submission. With that you can build, for example, a free download lead magnet that shows a thank-you message after submitting.
What it's for in practice and how to check that it works
The uses that fit: first-visit promotions, newsletter signup, flash sale ads, waitlists, free downloads, event registration, inline forms that don't interrupt (such as a calculator) or checkout forms on the page itself.
The plugin includes its own analytics to see which popups perform and which don't, and a debugger to preview the launch, inspect cookies and review behavior before publishing.
Is GP Popups right for you? Requirements and common questions
It needs Gravity Forms installed and active: it is an add-on and doesn't work alone. Popups are created from Forms › Popups, through feeds that are separate from the form. If you want a general-purpose popup builder with ready-made templates, here the design is fine-tuned with settings and, if you want something highly customized, with CSS and HTML.
Can I change a popup's form without rebuilding it?
Yes, you can change the form whenever you want from the popup's feed.
Can I close the popup on form submission?
Yes, with the automatic close after submission option and a configurable delay. There is also an instant close mode.
Can I pass field values to the popup form?
Yes, the plugin lets you pass field values to the popup form.
Do I need to know how to code?
Not for the basics: triggers, sizes, animations and rules are set up with settings. CSS and HTML are only needed if you want your own design.
Can I use my theme's styles?
Theme styles don't always apply inside the popup, so expect to tweak the look with CSS in the appearance tab.
