About Hero - Shoutcast and Icecast Radio Player With History
Listeners want to know what is playing right now
An online station can have great programming and still lose listeners over something very simple: someone hears a song they like, wants to know which one it is, and the website only has a play button with no title or artist. Hero deals with that moment: it shows the song and artist that are playing and, when it finds it, the singer's photo.
On an internet radio station, listeners don't only want to listen, they also want to be able to go back to what they just heard. That is why the song history matters more here than any visual effect.
The stream address is enough to get started
Hero works with Shoutcast and Icecast broadcasts. You add the stream address and the player gets the current song and the artist's photo, without you having to type titles by hand. The history behaves differently depending on the server:
- Shoutcast: the history is obtained automatically.
- Icecast: the history is generated while the radio plays, so it builds up as the broadcast goes on.
- If you prefer a cleaner player, there is an option to hide the history.
Sticky bar, minimal version or just the play button
Hero comes in several formats: standard, sticky, sticky minimal and play button only. Each one has two looks, white or black controls, and with the parameters you can create the color scheme you need to match your design.
There are over 40 parameters in total, including dimensions, autoplay and colors. You can also disable the responsive behavior if you integrate it into a website that isn't responsive. It includes buttons to share on Facebook and Twitter, with customizable title and description, and it is compatible with iOS and Android. The JS file is around 30 KB, which is welcome if your website already loads a lot.
If you want the music to keep playing while the listener moves to another page, check that behavior in the demo before deciding.
The artist photo only appears if it exists in its database
Hero plays and presents a broadcast that already exists, it does not create it. Here is what it already solves and what you have to cover yourself:
- Already solved: current song and artist, history, two looks and customizable colors, sticky and play-only versions, sharing buttons and mobile compatibility.
- You cover it with another service: the Shoutcast or Icecast streaming server that broadcasts your radio.
- You cover it by hand: the image of any artists that are not in the database, which you can't count on having a photo.
- You cover it with a professional: the rights to the music you broadcast, which are your responsibility and not the player's.
Frequently asked questions before installing Hero
Do I need my own radio server?
You need a Shoutcast or Icecast stream that is already broadcasting. The plugin plays it, it does not generate it.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes, it is compatible with iOS and Android, and its design is responsive.
Can I show only the play button?
Yes, there is a version and a parameter to show just the button, useful if you want something discreet in the header or a sidebar.
Does autoplay always work?
There is an autoplay parameter, but many browsers block automatic audio. Test it on different devices before relying on it.
