About HivePress Search Alerts

Visitors who search and find nothing leave and don't come back

In a directory, most visits end the same way: someone types what they want, nothing fits, and they close the tab. That visitor hasn't rejected you, they simply arrived before the listing they needed existed. And they won't check back every week just in case.

HivePress Search Alerts targets exactly that gap: the user saves their search and, when a matching listing is published, they receive an email. Your directory stops depending on people remembering to drop by.

Saved searches, emails and requests: what HivePress Search Alerts does

It is an extension for HivePress, so it needs the HivePress base plugin to work; it is not a standalone plugin. Here are its features:

  • Saved searches: the user keeps a list of their listing searches and can return to them.
  • Email alerts: every time a listing that matches the saved criteria is added, an email is sent.
  • Listings and requests: alerts also work with Requests, so someone can find out that a request matching what they offer has appeared.
  • Management from the profile: a dedicated section in the profile lets the user review, edit or delete their alerts at any time.

What to be clear about

The alert arrives by email; it does not include push or SMS notifications. Nor is it an email marketing tool: it can't be used for campaigns or newsletters, only to warn about matches with a saved search. And to use it with requests, your site must have that part of the directory enabled.

Common questions before enabling it

Does it work with any theme?

It is designed for sites built with HivePress. If your directory uses another listings plugin, it is not the right tool.

Does the user need an account?

Alerts are managed from the user's profile, so the approach revolves around registered users.

Does it work for both listings and requests?

Yes, it covers both: listings and requests.

Can the user unsubscribe?

They can edit or delete each alert from their profile at any time.

Which kind of directory benefits most

Think of someone looking for something very specific, with a defined city, category and range. That person doesn't want to check your site daily, they want you to tell them.

If your directory publishes few listings a year, alerts will rarely fire and the value will be small. With frequent new listings, however, every email is a reason to come back.

Alerts only work with HivePress installed and new listings coming in

Before installing, check three things: that your site already runs on HivePress, that your hosting email delivers properly (if alerts land in spam, the feature loses its point) and that your directory's search filters are useful enough for saving a search to mean something.

Then run a test: create a user account, save a search, publish a matching listing and verify that the email arrives and that the alert can be edited from the profile.
