About HivePress Social Login
Every social button is an application in your name on another platform
Anyone who reaches your directory and wants an account runs into a form and an email confirmation. HivePress Social Login swaps that procedure for one click with an account they already have: Facebook, Google or another of the eight available platforms.
For the visitor it is one click. For you, it is not. Every button you offer is an application you register on that platform, in your name, with its own ID and secret. So the useful decision is not how many networks to enable, but how many you want to look after. Facebook, for example, will ask you for a published privacy policy and a page explaining how to delete data.
Thinking of it this way changes how you begin: one or two networks your audience really uses, properly configured, rather than eight half done.
The eight accounts people can sign in with
- General: Facebook, Google and Amazon.
- Professional: LinkedIn.
- Technical: GitHub.
- Leisure and communities: Spotify, Twitch and Discord.
You choose which ones are offered in the HivePress settings, and the buttons appear in the sign-in form. X, Apple and Microsoft are not on the list, which matters if your audience mostly signs in with those accounts.
What Facebook and Google ask for before showing the button
Facebook. You need a developer account and to create an app with the Facebook Login use case. In its basic settings you enter your domain, your privacy policy URL, the data deletion instructions and the site category. Then you have to go live, with a verification step. The app ID and secret are pasted into HivePress.
Google. You create a project in the API console, configure the consent screen and generate an OAuth client ID. There you enter your site address in the authorized origins and the redirect URL HivePress gives you. That ID also goes into the integrations settings.
The other six. The pattern is the same: OAuth credentials from each platform and the HivePress redirect URL set on it. The specific steps are in each platform's documentation.
HivePress only, credentials required and no permission control
It does not work without HivePress. It only serves sites built with that directory plugin, which is free. On a regular WordPress site it does nothing.
It does not replace the configuration work. Without each platform's credentials there is no button, and it does not spare you from publishing the privacy policy Facebook requires.
It handles entry, not permissions. To make posting or contacting depend on a plan there is HivePress Memberships.
WordPress, PHP and the redirect URL for each platform
It needs WordPress 5.7 or higher, PHP 8.1 or higher and HivePress installed. From there:
- Upload the ZIP from Plugins, Add New, Upload Plugin, and activate it.
- In HivePress, Settings, Users, Registration, select the sign-in methods and save.
- Copy the redirect URL from that same section.
- Create the app on each platform and set that URL there.
- Paste the credentials into HivePress, Settings, Integrations, and save.
- Log out and test signing in with a real account.
If the button does not appear, wait a few minutes and confirm the method is still saved. If it still does not show, disable third-party plugins: it may be a caching issue or a conflict.
Other pieces for your directory and what to do without HivePress
Within HivePress, do not confuse this extension with HivePress Social Links, which adds social links to listings and profiles but gives nobody access. And if you want to charge on sales, HivePress Marketplace links the directory with WooCommerce.
If your site does not use HivePress, this extension is no use to you: look at Nextend Social Login Pro. For directories on Directorist there is Directorist Social Login.
