The system holding up most courses on WordPress
LearnDash is one of the few products in the ecosystem to have become a standard: when somebody says "a WordPress site with courses", in a good share of cases they are talking about this. Universities, academies and independent trainers use it for the same reason, because it does the boring, difficult part well.
How a course is structured
- Courses, lessons and topics, reorderable by dragging, which is the hierarchy any training with real content needs.
- Quizzes with eight question types: multiple choice, free text, sorting, fill in the blanks and more.
- Drip release, so content opens up over time rather than all on day one.
- Video progression, preventing advancement until the lesson has been watched.
- Certificates and achievements, with a built-in generator.
The two features that protect the business
And worth understanding together, because they solve the same problem: drip content and video progression.
A course delivered whole on day one gets downloaded whole on day one, and ten days later the refund request arrives. With content releasing week by week and the video requiring viewing, the person consumes the course at the intended pace, learns more and refunds less. It is not a capricious restriction, it is what makes selling training online viable.
Groups, the part that gets overlooked
It allows enrolling a whole group and appointing leaders who manage their own people and see their progress without touching anything else.
There lies the business many trainers do not see: a company buying twenty seats for its staff pays at once what twenty individuals would pay over months, and you do not have to convince twenty people, only one. If you sell training a company would want to give its team, that feature is worth more than all the others combined.
What has to be added
Payment works with Stripe and PayPal directly, or with WooCommerce if you already run a shop and want coupons, invoices and unified reporting.
The tutor's dashboard is not included: creating courses means entering the WordPress admin, which with several teachers is a problem. It gets solved with a front-end dashboard plugin.
The reporting in the base product is limited. If you need to know at which lesson people drop out, that is also an add-on.
Alternatives and add-ons in the catalogue
The direct alternative is Tutor LMS, and the practical difference is where the tutor works. Tutor ships the front-end dashboard as standard, so an institution with several teachers can start without adding anything. With LearnDash, that dashboard has to be added.
